Is it normal i drink on my meds?

I regularly drink alcohol on my psychriactic medications and have been doing so for several years. I know its not recommended but so far I have noticed 0 negative consequences from doing this. I do not take any MAOI's which are the ones that are especially dangerous to drink on. Currently I have been on the same 4 pills for the last couple years and drink a few times a week. I take an SNRI, an atypical antipsychotic, a stimulant and lithium. I also never get hangovers or feel sick either. I seem to have a very high tolerance. Is it normal that I have been able to do this for years with no consequence.

davesumba is an uneducated Scientologist idiot. Ignore him.

Yes, it's technically "normal" to drink on meds. Antidepressants don't usually stop people from drinking, although some are particularly dangerous (Cymbalta can destroy your liver, lithium causes dehydration).

No, it isn't healthy and three times a week seems really excessive for someone on four very powerful drugs. I drink on drugs like Lexapro and Zoloft, and while it isn't really recommended, it's not nearly as extreme as what you're doing.

    • I'm on both the ones you mentioned (cymbalta & lithium) as well as zyprexia and provigil. I've told my doc I drink on them too and she said lots of patients drink on their meds though it's not recommended. I've been doing it for years now.

No, taking psychiatric medicine alone fucks your brain up, taking alcohol with it makes it even worse.

Stay far far away from the scam that is psychiatry. When I have kids, I will never ever let them see a psychiatrist. How do people think it's a good idea to rewire your brain with added chemicals? It changes who you are, and it doesn't "fix" anything. ALL psychiatric medication has more/worse negative side effects than actual concrete medicinal value.

Anything and everything can be thought out on your own in your head. But if you need to take something, there are PLENTY of natural plants that you can take to help ease your thoughts.

    • I agree what your saying about meds being over prescribed although there are people who do benefit from them. If I wasn't taking them I would probably be in the loony bin. They may not cure anything but they do treat it.

The enzymes in the liver that breakdown these "Meds" and alcohol are one and the same, meaning that your body takes longer to breakdown either one of these products, so whilst you may not notice side-effects you may be causing irreversible damage to your internal organs. It is recommended not to drink on Meds for a reason, and that is tests will have been carried out on genetically similar organisms and the results likely show if you overdose minorly on the medication your body will cope, but adding alcohol on top of this may overload you body and cause huge amounts of damage. So whilst the amounts you are likely to be ingesting them on is safe, if you were take more than the recommended amount of either the medication or alcohol the consequences could be worthy of immediate medical attention.
