Is it normal i dont know my months at 21?

I'm 21 years old. I'd consider myself of average intelligence, being that im capable of mild to complicated maths, english and science. However, i don't know my months off by heart! I tend to panic when ever somebody brings up a month other than the one we're in, (eg: "what are your plans for july?") and often have to ask "how long till then?". Does anybody else feel this way, or is this normal?

    Well, if you know your maths you'll know that sept, oct, non (or nov), and dec signify 7, 8, 9, and 10. The Roman calendar started in March so you have an offset of +2 from our calendar. That means (Sept)ember (7+2) is the ninth month, (Oct)ober (8+2) is the tenth month, and so on. That's a third of the months covered.

    If you know a bit of mythology, January to June (except February) are named after Roman Gods (you could come up with a mental image in which they arrive in sequence, although what they signify is kind of logical in the northern hemisphere anyway). And July and August are the two Caesars (Julius and Augustus and are in order of when they ruled the empire).

    Or you could use mnemonics. Think of a person called Jason D. His name is the first letters of the last six months of the year.

      I used to do this days of the week song in first grade, and I sung a bit when I was way too old, but nobody else heard of it. Then one day my fiance started singin it (when we first met). I was like noo waayyy. =D

        If I was a girl, I would totally say "Awww!"

        But I'm not a girl, so all you get is a curt congratulations from me: "Congratulations!"

        :)

    jfmamjjasond I remember that as JF - MAM - J - JASOND.

    jf = jf kennedy
    mam = maam (a mother)
    j = j
    jason = some guy
    d = turns jason in to a verb. 'ed.

    jf's maam jjasoned. = jfmamjjasond

    I make sure to remember the index of the important months I will deal with in my life.. for you it was the 9th - september.

    to make it even easier I remember the first index of every grouping.

    jf = 1
    mam = 3
    j = 6
    jasond = 7

    If you ask me whats the 4 month I know it belongs in the `mam` grouping. or if you ask for 8 I know it's one of the `jasond`. counting away from a group index is a piece of cake. since `mam` starts with three then four must be the one after which is an `a` - april!!

    Man that's stupid. but It works for me!

      I like that :o)

      I teach kids so that's really good!

      I wonder does the OP know how many days are in each month by counting their 2 sets of knuckles on the back of their hands when put together?
      The knuckles are all the months that have 31 days but the dips have 30 except February which has 28/29.

    January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December~! Now I know the months!

    Me at 6. I'd say you're not normal, sorry.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I had to sing the months in my head until recently.. I've just gotten the hang of knowing what's after August. (September.. not October. R-right?)
    But if you ask me what the 6th month is, it'll probably take me a second before I realize it's July. I know most of the other ones, but I always forget July is the 6th...

    Wait.. that's June.
    I was about to edit that mistake out, but it proves the point of my whole comment. Hahaha.

    I know my months but I definitely have to sing them off.
    I know the numbers for July and August but that's only because my birthday is in August, and my sisters is the last week of July.
    But whenever people say the date is 3-28-12, I have to count off on my fingers to know that 3=March (Which is just did when typing this).
    Totally normal!

    To help clarify my point, i work in a store where i need to ask people for ID often. When i ask for ID, the till system requires me to complete the date of birth stated on the ID in numbers (eg; __/__/____ 29/02/1990). But some forms of ID only have the months abbreviation (eg;29/FEB/1990). This is where i begin to panic, as i dont know the order/numbers of the months.

    I think it's normal. If you learn them though they should stick with you. I have a hard time remembering holidays. Sometimes I sing the song to figure out what number which month is.

    I know the months, but I often have the same problem. Especially, with days and holidays. People will ask me my plans for valentines day or for Christmas and I always have to ask when it is. I've gotten quite a few odd looks because of this. But it's hard to remember things like that.

        Thanksgiving is different every year....it's always on the 4th Thursday of November, so the date differs.

        Not as bad as Easter... Observed on the first Sunday following the full moon that occurs on or following the spring equinox. Easter can vary from March 22 all the way to April 25. So, yeah...

    I have this too haha!
    I thought I was the only one.
    At first I didn't know anything except the first 2 or 3 months and the last one, and number 8 which is my birth month ;p
    But I'm 20 now and I practiced a bit sometimes but I still get stuck after august, the 9th, 10th and 11th months are still tricky for me and I always mix them up xD
    I don't know which number most of the months are still, I have to start from January to get there.
    Do you not know any of them or is it similar to what I have?

      I dont know the numbers of the months, and when i try to name and count them in my head, i'm always 1 or 2 short of 12, so i'm somehow completely forgetting some months.

    It's not normal, but by that I mean just not very common. There are certain things that certain people just don't remember. I'm sure you're fine, since you know the basics of anything else. :b

        Thanks, I live to make people aggravated. And of course I don't remember everything, as, just like most people, things start to slip away from the mind. But being able to name the months should be an easy and rudimentary task, and is basically unforgivable on my rigid set of standards.

        P.s. I don't believe in god.
