I have no idea how you are linking this to having friends? The reason they look for reverences is they want to know you are good worker. I personally have no references beside family because all the teachers in my school refused to reference anyone.

  • Because no one wants to work with an asshole.

Because you spend about 40 hours a week with your coworkers, might as well make sure everyone gels together well.

Because friends of a feather flock together, and if the friend that's listed as a reference is a shady prick on the phone, then it reflects poorly on the job-applicant since they cannot choose his/her references appropriately. Not having classy people to back you up when you're trying to land a job is a bit of a red-flag to employers.
