What's the deal?

Fat people aren't allowed to make fun of other fat people, stupid people can't call other people stupid. 2 black people calling each other 'niggers' isn't effective.

Why do you HAVE to be the opposite of whoever it is you're insulting? I think all insults should be taken equally seriously. It shouldn't matter who is saying it. A fat guy has the same perception of another fellow fat guy as a skinny guy does, and that's all that matters isn't it?

    In my opinion that comes across as being a bit hypocritical, but mainly just stupid. If you're going to insult someone, then it's not really effective when you're also insulting yourself in the process. I don't really see the point in that. And going around criticising people for doing things you're guilty of isn't going to do you any favours either.

      Provided the kettle is indeed black, the pot has made an accurate assessment, then. Why doesn't that mean anything? If a white dinner plate said it, then it's serious. Huh? It's the same damn thing! And the fucking kettle IS black. I don't get it.

    I see where you're coming from, but I have to disagree. A Grammar Nazi who can't spell the word "grammar" isn't very effective, and black people can't very well hate other black people just for being black, or they're discriminating against THEMSELVES. By insulting someone, it's usually to prove a point that you're better—so if you're not, it really defeats the purpose.

    Insults aren't meant to have rules. The whole point of an insult is for it to be insulting and to offend the people you say it to, otherwise it isn't even an insult. If you start setting up rules about what insults are and are not allowed, you don't even have insults anymore. If society says you're not allowed to say something, that probably makes it more effective as an insult.

    Or maybe I'm not understanding properly.

    Are you asking about hypocrisy, or are you asking about reclamation of slurs? Because those are two completely different issues.

    N***** is completely different, because its use by black people often isn't an insult and is centred around reclaiming the word. That specific word is a slur because of centuries of oppression and violence by non-black people (particularly white people, but not exclusively), and it means something completely different coming from a black person. It has nothing to do with hypocrisy.
