Is it normal i don't understand slut shaming?

Like many people, I'm a huge fan of women's bodies. They look so nice. If a girl wants to show hers off, that's awesome and it makes no sense to discourage that. "Sluttiness" seems like the ultimate win-win to me: she gets to fulfill her desire to show off and we get to see her tits. Why on earth would anyone oppose that?

I feel like women are portrayed in magazines, tv, and internet, to appeal to others. They wear little to nothing to show off their air-brushed figures, or cabbage soup diet bodies. I think the fantasy, is slipping into reality, and too many women only value themselves for their appearance, rather than their contributions in life.

Value the shape and appearance of a woman's body, just don't let that become her only value. Women shouldn't be viewed as sex objects.

      Honey you said it!
Sweet Brown will NOT be a tool for anyone! I want people to see the sweet and dazzling lady underneath. I need man to love me for me! OOOOH I NEED ME A COLD POP!

  • This is probably just me, but whenever I see girls dressed "slutty", I automatically think attention whore with low self esteem who doesn't feel good about herself unless she is flaunting her body to get attention. On the flip side, she could also be super confident to rock her own body, but I can't help but flash to the negative image first.

People oppose it, perhaps, because they have more self control than your tit hungry self.

It's perfectly fine that women want to dress to show off their bodies, but there's a time and place for it. I don't clip my toenails while others eat at a restaurant, and for a lot of people seeing ass-cheeks at said restaurant would hit the same gag reflex. It's a simple matter of expressing respect for those who may not want to see such things. If it weren't I would certainly fart aloud and blow my nose on a tablecloth. Because that is what makes me feel better.

But chicks can run even faster in jeans and Doc Martens. Unless I have a reason to be dolled up I prefer to be combat ready. Then again I'm Gen Xer so I've worn Doc Martens with skirts and dresses be they long or short.
      ;-)

        jeans? really?
I would've thought jeans would be quite restricting of movement

I don't wear skin tight clothes that restrict my movement. I wear boot cut stretch denim jeans which are like 5% spandex. However, my favorite things to wear are my black yoga pants. I think a lot of women's clothes and shoes make them look vulnerable; I'm not into looking vulnerable. Looking strong is much more fun!

  • Because it does a disservice to decent, more conservative people like me; not to mention others, such as children and practically all religious groups known to man.

Face it: some things SHOULD be held sacred and kept private.

Just exactly is bad about the human body? Your prudish, puritanical morals are unrealistic and out dated. Religion IS the greatest SIN; the root of all prejudice and hatred. Why should children be brought up thinking the human body is sinful?
What happened to "love thy neighbor", "do onto others as you would have them do onto you", and all those other wonderful ideals that you are supposed to be part of faith? Obviously, you missed those lessons. The teachings of christ are apparently NOT sacred to you. You are just a lip service religious person, I guess.

      • I am not religious in the slightest.

While the body may not be "sinful" in and of itself, it is not something to be cheapened and flaunted like a piece of meat.

If you still can't see eye to eye with me on this matter, fine; just prove you're not all talk, and immediately make arrangements to enrich your daughter's wardrobe with a collection of thongs, tube tops and barely-existent shorts. I'm sure many guys would VERY much appreciate such a decision.

This discussion was never about girls, I don't believe. It was about women, who have a right to dress as they please. My daughters are grown women, and as such may dress as they choose, just as they may choose the partner of their choice.
I neither dictate to them or anyone else how they should live their lives.

"it is not something to be cheapened and flaunted like a piece of meat."

ah, but it is on the part of the viewer to !perceive! the body as a piece of meat, and to perceive that person as someone who is only their body and who is cheap and who is degrading themselves for superficial attention.

Some viewers may see someone dressed scantily, and also see a vibrant personality and a beautiful soul at the same time. They don't have to contradict.

Meh, it's a fine line. Everyone has a choice, and joy in sexual communication is great much in the same way socialism is great in theory, but it doesn't work, because in the end, guys "get to see tits" and that's what it's all about- dudes still reaping the rewards of sexual freedom, taking advantage of it, feeling entitled to it, imposing sluttiness on the world as norm. When I was young, the power of sluttiness was dizzying until I realized I was actually giving up my power by trading on it, not getting nearly as much back as the men were getting. It's always been like this, even more so as women got the vote and were "liberated" from traditional female roles. Let's face it, we're slaves no matter what if we depend on men for 1) money 2) attention 3) security.

I'm sorry. I didn't realize that all women who show off their bodies are sluts.

I think shaming people for their clothing choices, which don't impact anyone else, or the sex they have, which doesn't impact anyone else, is really stupid. People should wear what they want where they want whenever they want, and if other people have a problem with that they should recognise that they are the source of the problem.

The assumption that people don't respect themselves because they choose to wear certain clothes or choose to have a lot of sex is also ridiculous.

I think saying it's okay to wear "slutty clothes" because it's nice to look at is missing the point. It's okay to wear "slutty clothes" because it doesn't matter other people think.

I agree, except around children. I find it a bit disrespectful to dress provocatively in a child-centered environment.

Actually I can sort of understand why women do it, it's competition. What really confuses me is when men do it.
