Is it normal i don't know what to do as a career?

is it normal to be 22.5 yrs old and never went to college, and have no idea what i really want to do as a career?

i work at UPS, which everyone i know keeps telling me to never leave, cause they are a really good company. and i am waiting to get on a truck in a few years. but it's not what i really want to do, but i feel stuck at this job, because i don't think i'd find something better.

there's another problem. UPS is based on seniority, and where i am located isn't where i want to live my life. but, again i feel kind of stuck hear cause if i did move and get the same job, i'd have to start from the bottom again because of seniority.

there is only one thing i do have a desire to do, but physically can't. and that is to join the Army. but i have too many things medically wrong to get in.

any advice?

the things i like to do, i like the outdoors, like hiking, and camping, i like off roading, boats, and i love to drive.

the only thing i can really think of is to be a truck driver of some sort. but they don't make too much money. and i have no money for school any way.

any advice is much appreciated.

  • Is it true that everyone who joins the Army has to be battle ready? Aren't supply clerk or technical positions available? Educate me.

you need to meet physical fitness standards. you are excluded for persistent medical conditions unless your area of specialty is high demand, like doctor or lawyer or chaplain, but all those are officer.

      • Don't some injured soldiers re-enlist? Is this physical requirement enforced by all branches of the military? The Air Force too? I find it hard to believe that someone who works as a cook in a mess hall needs to be as fit as a front line infantry man.

Well, if you're screwed on that front, there's always a bunch of exciting, manly occupations out there like:

        -Coast Guard (it employs civilians)
        - Police Officer
        - Fire Fighter (in the Grand Canyon)
        - FBI Agent
        - Airline Pilot
        - Antarctica Science Station Worker
        - Lumberjack;Trucker
        - Wine Vineyard Job
        - Skydiving Instructor
        -Train Engineer
        -Cruise Ship Jobs
        -Wildlife Rehabilitator
        -Ski Instructor
        -Paramedics/EMT's

  • Since you say you are only 22 you're not that high up, so I don't think you'd lose much in a move.

Find a place you want to live. Like Lake Tahoe. Or the Sierras. Or wherever you want to be. I would think UPS was everywhere, so arrange a move to that place. I would think working for UPS would expose you to a lot of the different things in your new area, too. So explore. take some time to learn the area and the people. Maybe a marina has an opportunity, or a campground, or a general/supply store in a small town. Be open to new things and make a change.
