Is it normal i do this when everyone is out

As soon as the house is empty, I systematically begin going through my mothers posessions. She has a large extended family and stockpiles presents which I'll look through and if theres something I think she won't notice that I want, I'll nick it. Or at least this was how it started when I was younger. I stopped stealing a long time ago, but I still look through all the presents and through all her cosmetics and stuff (I'm female). She hides the stuff all around her room and I find all of it, look at it, and then put it back.

Recently, I went into my little brothers room looking for a lighter. It was in the drawer where he keeps stuff he doesnt want my parents to see, and I looked through it even though I could have just grabbed the lighter and left, instead I looked through his personal items (condoms, lighters, long rizla, empty baggies of weed, standard stuff for a teenage boy). Me and my brother are really close and none of it was a suprise to me. There was notebooks and stuff but I didnt look in them.

I have also done this with my flatmate. WHen shes been out I went and nosied around her room and looked at her stuff.

This is a gross invasion of privacy and I'd hate someone to do it to me. Why do I do this? Is it normal (although clearly immoral)? Does anyone else do stuff like this? I'm 22

I once looked through my mum's stuff when she was out. Let's just say that my young, innocent mind was no more.

I can relate because I too would go digging around the house just to see what I can find. I wouldn't even know what I'm looking for just find something that peaks my interest then put it back how I found it. I guess we're just really curious simple as that. Also I don't know about you but in the back of my mind finding something different or shocking.

I think the key point is you'd hate if someone did it to you.

Not everyone out there has the inclination, I don't think... but enough people do that it's not unheard of.

When I was much younger I did it a lot, just going through stuff that belonged to my family much like you said. I even became somewhat obsessed with "Harriet the Spy" novels when I was little and would follow people around and take notes on whatever I could to learn more about who they were and what kind of lives they led. (I actually still have some of my old spy notebooks from all the way back to about age 10)

I think it's worth being very careful when you choose to ACT on the inclination, because as you say, it's an invasion of privacy... but the desire to do so is relatively "normal" for some of us.

I think a lot of people with a really strong desire like this end up becoming investigators, for newspapers, police departments, medical teams, etc. I think it just shows that there are positive ways to channel the urge that don't hurt family :)
