Is it normal i do not understand the purpose of kissing?

I do not understand the purpose of kissing. It has many different meanings in many different cultures. Some kisses are to show love like a kiss on the cheek to mom and dad. Some are simple greeting like a kiss on your hand or a kiss on each cheek like in the french culture.

We have making out kind of kissing but I don't see the purpose of this. It is understandable why people like being touched in the crotch(male/female area) because it is sensitive.

Hormones tell us to have sex. So of course people like being touched in the crotch, butt things like that. The only thing that does not seem to have any motivating factor is kissing(making out). Some people don't like kissing either. So how does making out tie into sexual attraction and intercourse. It makes no sense but everyone does it.

Everything humans do can be broken down. Everything people do is motivated by something. Be it misguided in some cases. If sex is made to produce babies what does the function of kissing do for a person? It is not like you are exchanging material to produce offspring. So what is the purpose and who invented it.

  • Kissing actually originated from our ape ancestors. A tradition among many modern primates is to pre-chew the food for offspring prior to weaning.

The ultimate display of affection is to offer food. It became erotic with time. What better way to ensure propagation?

This is a simplified, and more sociable summary of what suckonthis9 said.

It wasn't invented, it was discovered. The lips are one of several different erogenous zones. The "crotch" is merely one of them.

There are much more areas that are considered erogenous zones on the human body than the "crotch and butt". Lips are considered one of them, as described by others above. The neck, ears, nipples, toes...well, it can vary from person to person but most people have other areas of their body that if sensually stimulated can produce sexual arousal. Obviously for the male, this would mean erection which is biologically important for procreation. For the woman, this would mean lubrication, among other things. It is shown that while not necessary, a woman's sexual pleasure increases the chances of getting pregnant. So, from a strictly clinical standpoint kissing and other non-genital contact does have its role in human reproduction. But, if you're kissing strictly for clinical reasons, you need a new partner.

Actually, considering how sensitive your lips are and how many nerves are in and around your mouth, kissing makes total sense. Not to mention that chemicals and hormones passed through saliva while kissing help increase arousal and bonding.

I feel the same way, and counting from the other comments, it seems we are few who don`t, but hey, it makes me more unique

In my experience, kissing is an acquired taste and it depends a lot on how you feel about the person you're kissing. What they say in the books is true - some people, there's just SOMETHING ELSE there that makes it enjoyable, and it's really hard to pinpoint exactly why that is. Maybe it's just that it's a social construct, and because of the romantic connotations attached to it, it makes you feel good.

I used to think the same way, dude. The only reason I sort of understand it is because I've found someone I enjoy kissing. And the only reason for that is because I'm seriously romantically interested in him. I wouldn't want to kiss just anyone!

I don't have anything for you as far as how kissing originated or how it came to be the way it is, but as for WHY people kiss - it's because it is enjoyable under the right circumstances. Perhaps you just haven't found those circumstances yet! Or maybe you just don't like kissing. Which is okay too! It all depends on your personal tastes, I guess.

Your brain dedicates a disproportionate amount of cortex for your mouth's tactile sensory input. That could be why people put their mouths on things.

Kissing, in a sexual way, should be mutually pleasurable. If it isn't, then you're not doing it correctly.
Otherwise, kissing is a behavior to show affection, or as a token of greeting, in some cultures.

These are two bonobo (Pan paniscus) females playing and kissing. The bonobo, and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), are our (Homo sapiens sapiens) two closest extant relatives. We all shared common ancestors between 4 to 7 million years ago. It is probably safe to say that our very distant relatives, before we became anything close to human (Homo), were kissing.

The only people, who typically do not kiss, are the Inuit people and related groups. They do not kiss because they live in the Arctic, and their lips would actually freeze together! They rub noses, instead.

You say this because your whole experience is watching this stuff online and never actually engaging in it. From an outside observer's point of view, what you are saying makes sense. Not in reality, though.

    • It does very little. I have done it before and it was never as fun as they make it look in movies. Also from a scientific point of view it has no purpose either. We are motivated to do it. However not a very clear reason why.
