Is it normal i cant ever figure out yearly/monthly pay?

I have problems trying to figure out yearly and monthly pay. People could tell me "Oh he make 70000 a year" and I just kind of stare at them since I am trying to figure out how to do the math. Yet they know automatically if 70000 is poor and if 25000 is not poor.

I get a paycheck every two weeks. I just count my two weeks estimate how much I have for each day and multiply to get month and than do that times 12 to get yearly. I am not sure how people say "I make 70000 a year" and instantly know if its a lot or a little pay.

I mean that is so much more complicated apposed to working from the bottom up. Is there something wrong cause everyone else seems to gets this and I don't get it?

I don't understand what is throwing you off. People are generally paid hourly. When you get paid a salary, the hourly rate gets omitted and bundled into the yealy number. These people are not ding math, they just have a memory. grab a calculator and put in 70000/2080=33.653846. then remember that 34 an hour is pretty good. If you feel poor, you either work too few hours, or you don't know how to manage your money. Or, third option, you live in an expensive place to live.

if you work in the US, you can take your hourly rate and multiply it by 2080 (the number of hours the typical full time person works (or gets paid for) in a year.

another option is to take your bi-weekly gross pay (amount before deductions) and multiply by 26 (the number of pay periods in a year when paid bi-weekly). that amount is your annual pay. then you can also divide that number by 12 to get your actual monthly pay which would be slightly more than if you just added two if your bi-weekly checks together.

Some people are paid salary so a set amount and then they would divide it down to an hourly rate. Most know their hourly and need to multiply it for their annual

you know you can use a calculator.

multiply your weekly pay by 52 or your monthly pay by 12

I don't know about everyone else but, I find it normal. I am not good at manipulating numbers.

    • Well I can work forward. I just don't understand how people are doing this backwards! If you do it forward you figure out your weekly check and know how much it costs for all your finances/utilities in a month. Yet if you go from the end of the month/year you have to count back by Days and than turn those days into months, and than days, and than hours. I just don't see why people do it this way! Forward to end is easier than end to front! That and people instantly know if you say "I make 70000 a year" and they can say instantly "Oh you make a good/bad amount of money". Like they have a chart or something.

it's not common for people to openly share their income level anyway, so why even tell someone? you don't need their opinion and you can use online resources to compare what you make to income levels in your area where you live or even specifically to the field/career in which you work. so their opinion isn't important if you do your own research anyway.

people don't need to know how much you make, just be humble if someone asks and avoid the question with something like "oh, I make a decent living..." then change the subject!

        • Apparently you don't have to. I guess you don't get to ask if they can take it down. I don't care sharing. Some people get mad that its posted for everyone to see though. I not sure why they are allowed to do this but I guess they are. Why other people are required to know though I am not really sure. My family heard this in 2004 I think it was. You can search it and find anyone's income.

what country are you referring to? because that's not the norm for the US unless you are a government employee.

Ha, I really don't understand that. Basic math confuses me..but, this is just blasphemy.
