Is it normal i can't watch old movies because of this?

Most older movies have so much music in them it's just obnoxious. It's always harp heavy sappy orchestral music playing through the whole movie to dramatize every single move the actors make. Did everyone in the 30s and 40s really have an orchestra following them around?

I'm not against music scores in movies at all. It's that they always used the same style of music in these old ones and they just wouldn't stop for a second through the whole movie in most cases.

Contemporary movies have less music and the style is far more varied. My only problem with newer movies is that the music can be so LOUD compared to the dialogue that it's hard to watch if you're trying to be quiet.

is it normal this gets on my nerves?

    It's just a question of getting used to different styles and genres.

    Some 80s films are horrid because of the heavy-handed synth scores, I find.

    In the future today's films will appear dated for other or possibly similar reasons.

    What was missing then in cinematic magic was made up for by using music to invoke emotion. Today the cinematographer has so much more to use to get you involved, that quite often the music actually detracts from the film.
    All your senses have been so totally bombarded by modern society, that the subtleties of that old music cannot move you, hence; it bores you.

    I enjoy musicals. However a lot of times they mess up musicals. Musicals are not simply singing everything you say. It has to make sense, it has to be timed right, and it has to fit the scene. I have seen old musicals and new musicals that were masterpieces. I have also watched old and new musicals that were awful. Like anything it has to be done right.
