Is it normal i can't seem to come up with original story ideas?

I love writing and write a lot but mostly my stories are usually a spin off of a movie/book I've read. I can't seem to think of an original story idea. Well I know there's really no such thing as 'original' but I mean I can't even think of a good idea of an existing idea. I mean I could write about really far fetched stuff but it sounds ridiculous when I look back and read it so I end up ripping it up anyway......

Any Ideas?

I'm a published writer...don't go for the story...find that amazing character...if you have a great character, the book or story writes itself...that character writes through you.

Try writing some fanfiction then. There are plently of places to publish little stories like that (try fanfiction.net) for others to read and review. :)

Idk dude- what I do is take my life and blow it out of proportion think about all the crazy things that happen in your life and then your weird scenarios you think to you self that coulda happend. Take you life make it the story not literally of course unless it's that interesting

Look for situations in your own life, then tweak them.

Don't rip up your own writing. I've done that myself, and seriously regretted doing it. Even if it's not very good, you can look at your writing months or years later, and learn something from it.

There's nothing wrong with doing stories based on TV/movies... I've read fanfiction that's better than a lot of published books I've read. It's a good starting point if you don't have a lot of writing experience.

I'm an amateur artist/writer and I understand how you feel. I can't come up with original ideas without basing it off existing characters/storylines either. There's just no such thing as an original idea anymore. If you go on IMDB.com and look at upcoming movies for the next couple of years, all you will see is remakes.

Yeah it's normal and believe me I know it sucks. Try having a good idea but not really knowing how to write about it for some reason. Oh and don't rip up your ideas even if you believe they suck. Save all your writing you will be glad you did! Saving your writing also helps you to see how much you have improved! :)

I know what you mean, I have tried to write a book several times and I get bored with my own story!! I am looking for a good plot as well, if you find one let me know!

  • Use it to your advantage! Take a characteristic from a book or a movie and manifest it into your own idea.

Buy a digital voice recorder, a lighter, a pipe, and some good weed. Turn on recorder, place weed in pipe, light with light, inhale, and let the original ideas flow. When you sober up these ideas will seem very stupid, but they aren't, trust me. Tweak them a little bit to be more linear and there you go.

If you ask for ideas on here, it still wouldn't be original now would it?
