Is it normal i can not open a can properly?

I cant open a can properly. I don't cut from the inside of the can but cut the entire lid off. This is actually the only way I can open a can but everyone else opens it from the inside. Every time I try opening it from the inside it gets stuck or I break the can opener.

    • I broke it a few times. Im not the only one either. They break a lot. We bought like 10 already and we have to buy a knew one every month or so. The one we got has lasted a lot longer though.

you need to buy those ones that are made of all metal, they are made in England.

        • I did have one made of metal. I thought they were all made of metal? What else would one make them out of?

Most of them have plastic handles.

Seriously, just go on Amazon or something and start reading the reviews. Buy something good instead of that cheap crap that you have. You'll probably end up saving money anyway because you won't have to replace it every month. Not to mention you won't risk slicing your hand open either.

Stop buying shitty can openers from Walmart or the Dollar Store.

The point was stop buying shitty ones. Try something like a Zyliss Lock-n-Lift can opener. (I'm not a can opener geek or anything, I just happen to have one in my kitchen and it works well.)

The funny thing is I had no idea you could use a normal can opener to open a can the "wrong" way, like you describe. But I tried it, and sure enough, you can. It wasn't easier, but surprisingly it wasn't terribly hard either. It does create a big exposed sharp edge though.

    • Well I only open it the way I described since every time I opened it the other way I cant push it through and it gets stuck in the can. So either I have like 20 random holes in the can and I cant open it. So I do it the other way since it seems to slide it open easier.

It did seem to be thinner metal on the sides.

        • You think that is why?

That's really weird. Those can openers have been around since 1855. If they were that difficult to use, I wouldn't think they would stay around.
Perhaps you are just not mechanically inclined and haven't figured out how to use one properly.
Is there anybody you know who CAN operate one properly who could teach you?

    • I use it like most people would use it accept backwards. So instead of cutting the inside of the lid I remove the entire lid. When I do it the other way it just gets stuck in the can.

Well, that does explain your problem; you use it BACKWARDS! Try using it the correct way!

        • I tried using it the correct way. I got the can opener stuck and couldn't open the can. So after awhile I just started opening it the other way. Everyone thinks its weird when I do this but that is the only way I can open the can. Easier said than done.

  • I hate using manual can-openers.
