Is it normal i can barely breath through one of my nostrils?

First of I'll mention that from what I can tell, I have a dust allergy, so I'm not sure if that is the problem here, but even if I take allergy syrup, the problem remains.

So the problem is that I can barely breath through my left nostril, it feels blocked all the time. It's been like this for months, possibly almost a year now. I'm worried I won't ever be able to breath properly through my nose. My right nostril isn't perfect either, and always feels slightly blocked. I'm starting to wonder if this is a permanent problem for me, it's quite depressing actually. Any ideas why this is happening? Is it normal? Thanks.

You probably have a deviated septum. Sometimes your nose can look the same with it as it would do with out. It can be corrected with surgery but I haven't dared to fix mine :p

Btw, I also have dust allergy and I use a nasal spray for my runny nose xD I'm not so sure a syrup could help in this matter. Anyway, an Otolaringologist is the doctor to go to for both problems. Good luck!

    • Thanks for the reply. Yes, I forgot to mention I also use a nasal spray which works well for my allergy symptoms, however nothing fixes my breathing. Deviated septum, though? That sounds really bad. Guess I'll look it up anyway. :P

i had a Deviated septum. I used to have a real difficulty breathing especialy during sleep.
as Preacher suggested a few years ago I got some surgery do to fix it,i don't know how much it costs since i have free helth, but it was quite a simple operation, they just correct the shape cartilage in your septum.

deviated septum usualy causes one nostril to work fine while the other is totaly or partialy blocked, another simptom is a slightly crooked nose, i don't think you have it since you usualy have it from birth (like me) or inproper healing after braking your nose. yours is probably just bad allergies.

easy breathing for me now :D

Before you go through the trouble of expensive surgery, have you tried shoving one of your fingers up there to see if it's blocked? Maybe there's just one too many boogers or nose hairs up there.

I have the same problem except that I have no allergies but this doesn't handicap me so I don't worry much about it

I guess Preacher is right. You may have deviated septum. One of my cousins has been suffering from this for a while now. Don't you worry. This is a common disorder and you can permanently solve this problem by undergoing a minor surgery called Septoplasty. You can learn more about this problem of yours through this wiki link :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasal_septum_deviation

I advise you to seek medical help ASAP. Good luck!!
