Is it normal: i am frustrated over this role-player?

Hi everyone, I've had this problem for the last 4 years. I've never had the courage to voice my opinion on it (So please be nice :( ). Also, I'd appreciate it if you'd leave out "It's just a game" or "Just a story move on" comments because it's starting to affect my life too, kay?

About 4 years ago, I was friends with a girl at school and we began to role-play over a forum we made. It was a story of two OC's, and over time into a story about a whole host of characters fighting against evil! (Cliché, but I loved it :) )

I was 10, a beginner role-player when we started out, but now I am older and wiser, I've noticed she's been bending rules that we set up at the beginning (She does this in real life too)! Everything is about her, and all of her characters have some tragic past, come from horrid backgrounds or are completely overpowered.

She claims this is realistic, that issues like this happen every day. But it is making me upset how whenever I try to start a new character, or plan a new plotline, she steam-rolls over it with a plot of how we find out a character of hers comes from a far off planet or a broken home or is 1/2 dragon 1/2 demon or 1/2 angel. (the list just goes on and on!)

Somehow this means she (her characters) is stronger then me, when we said we'd have a level of strength, and no negotiation! She complains to me and guilt trips me into it being my fault (and never hers) that no one likes her characters and she feels left out, she's neglected. I realise what she's been doing now, I feel manipulated.

1 year into this role-play, my closest friend joined, I was overjoyed. We welcomed her happily, she brought lots of new ideas in. We had a whole year of fun! That was until the first friend suddenly left. She broke all contact with me. Whenever I saw her, she ignored me or spouted escuses.

I discussed what to do with the RP with my best friend, we chose to carry on, picking up the pieces from where she left. There was a huge gulf in the story now, it needed fixing. We saw it fitting that since the first friend had said she was leaving the story to us, we carry on. I felt sad and abandoned, while the first friend pretended they didnt know me.

During the last year, she's returned. She was outraged. She screamed at us both for not waiting, deserting her, and that her characters had nowhere to go and she hated the role-play. I tried to explain to her it was just a game, and we could start anew (sp?) if she wanted, but no, she wouldn't have that. I cried a lot that night, I couldn't believe she had expected us to wait THAT LONG for her to come back.

She logs on very briefly nowadays, but when she does we always argue, and the role-play has become tense. My best friend no longer wants to be around the first friend, and I try to keep the peace between them. All I want is no more fighting :( seeing as it's just a game.

Is this situation normal? Is my anger justified? :( please answer me x

If you take the game as a metaphor for life, then what we're actually saying is that some people observe the rules and some people bend them for their own benefit. I'm with you on this - I tend to follow rules, particularly in friendships and relationships. I have friends who don't and although it annoys me when people welch on bets or don't pay their way, they're still friends. People are different. Rather than focus on the faults of others, the best thing we can do is work on how to be more tolerant.

    • :o I read through what you said, and I respect your point that maybe I'm not the most tollerant person in the world :s I just don't think it's right that she should get away with ruining the fun of others :|

      Thankyou though! :3 xx

This seems pretty normal to me. I used to have the same sort of problem, but with a live-action "imagination game". The "The" Game, we called it! It was all about a world war, so it was naturally very hard when one of the Players left The The Game and missed half the action and then he Rejoined!

I think that this roleplaying game seems a bit toxic. Something is missing, or something is wrong. Your first friend seems jealous. Try to reconnect her to the game (and henceforth her to you and your newer friend) as you play it from the beginning again. Or there's always the "X" button.

  • I can read it and i think i understand, is there any way she can rejoin the game? tell her straight "we missed you in the game it was fun with you" then put it back on her "what can we do now?" try not to say statements just ask questions. you sound nice, good luck

    • Cheers for replying so fast :)
I have talked it over with her and we're going to start over, if we have to.

Although none of us are 100% happy over going back to the beginning, it's the right thing to do :) x

Thanks so much, I really am glad that someone can understand this from my point of view xx
