I think you should balance three factors: how serious was their relationship, how much you like/love the person and how long it has been since they have been together. However, as a personal rule, I think you should always ask your friend for "permission" before you make your move.

OK. I'm going to take the unpopular position. A true friend will want you to be happy, no matter how it hurts him. If she wasn't for him, and he let her go, then she's free. Yes there's a lot of girls out there, but a lot of phony friends too. So you loose a friend, but you gain the love of your life. I hope it works out.

I'm with my friends ex... I felt terrible at first. I've been with her longer than a year and I think I'm in love to be honest. It was awkward between me and my friend at first but we've been good for the past 7-8 months or so and I see him regularly.

To be honest, I'm glad I went against my morals because I'm in a happy relationship and I'm still friends with her ex. I wonder how many potentially really happy couples there could have been if there wasn't this rule...
