Is it normal for your long hair to feel 'unreal'?

My hair has grown to the longest it's ever been in my life, it's right at my waist now. When I look at it, touch it, play with it and twirl it around it seems so unreal, like as if it's not really 'my' hair because it's so damn long.

Is this normal?

Yup. This time last year mine started touching my butt. That was something I had to get used to. Especially when I walk it taps that ass with every step Haha. It touches my palms too like who's tryin to hold my hand here?!?! Wooo! Its like I'm never alone!!

    • Cool! You have dreads, right? I've been considering doing dreads but I have some reservations. Do you mind if I ask you some questions about it?

        • K. I guess I'll start off by telling you why I'd like to do it so that if I have any misconceptions you can let me know!

-I hate styling my hair but I definitely want a distinct style, and dreads would fit with my personal style....I'm thinking with dreads I have the option of doing nothing at all and still having a style or putting my hair up or whatever and it won't have to be so precise like with my normal hair. I've always liked 'messy' styles but with my hair how it is I can't pull it off so well. It looks messy in a bad way! It lays too flat, I'd love the volume that dreads would give it!!

-I've always had longer hairstyles and I intend to keep it growing but I'm sick of having to get trims and getting all the breakage at the ends that thin my hair out. I HATE going to the salon for a cut!!!!!

I'm scared to do it because what if I look like an idiot?? Is there no turning back once you start? Would I be able to live with the general look of dreads for a few days and be able to go back to my old hair if I don't like how it looks?

Is washing your hair a real pain in the butt? How often do you wash it, and is there special products you have to use? How long does it take to dry?

          Can you dye/bleach your hair?

Basically how much time do you spend on just the bare essential maintenance of your hair in a week?

Is it hard to get the new growth to dread up?

Is it extraordinarily painful or itchy?

I realize I'm probably one of a thousand people who has asked you about your hair (and I'm sorry, I really am...), but this leads me to the next question....how often do you get bothered IRL by people curious about your hair? Is it as annoying as I think it might be?

If there's anything else you think I should know then please add it!! I appreciate you taking the time to read and answer this!! :)

PS: I have slightly wavy, normal texture white person hair. If that matters!

Well let's see. It is a fairly care free do to have but it does need some special love and attention. Since you have long hair already I would do the back-combing method. If you do a few loosely it may give you an idea of what you look like and you can still brush it out if you don't like it. Some people say you can get them out no matter what, but I don't see that happening with mine. I wouldn't make them real thin either, they could end up getting thin and breaking, especially if you dye it. I bleached it all when it was still short and keep up on the roots...bastards. so yes you can dye it but just rinse gooood.
There is residue free shampoo but I just use whatever I want. I do use a lil conditioner sometimes, but not til their established. You have to make sure you rinse it all out and then I wring it out before I use a towel and then it takes hours to dry all the way.
Ummm the roots just sort of do their thing, you have to keep them separated. Sometimes everyday I make sure they aren't converging with the one next to it. From sleeping and stuff.
I'll be back to finish....Dishes need to be done! :)

So I wash it about three times a week, at least twice. I never had any itching problems. A few times it hurt a wee bit if the roots start grabbing somewhere weird it pulls a little but that's easily fixed.
People do ask or comment pretty often. It can get annoying but only when its the same question. The one I hate....I hear you can't wash that or is it true you can't wash that. Grrr shut the fuck up you have to wash it!!!!! Those people bug me.
Mine was so short when I started and I just let it happen on its own so I don't know exactly what to expect with hair thats already long. A lot of people have said to me that they had them for about a year but for whatever reasons got rid of them. It is a bit of a comitment.

Why would it feel unreal? I guess is because I've never had long hair.

There are no nerve endings in hair so it makes sense. If I wear my hair down I feel like someone keeps touching the back of my neck for ages... takes some getting used to. When I had really short hair it wasn't a problem, but I missed the longer hair - grass is always greener! I often wear it up because it's just easier. I'm planning on cutting it short again. I can't imagine having hair to my waist! 'Bra strap length' is enough for me.

Haha, I sort of get what you mean. My hair is the longest it's been in ages, and I really like it at this length. I tend to twirl my hair and play with it anyway, but I've been doing it more often than usual. I really like my hair at the moment. Although, this might wear off once we get used to it.:P
