Is it normal for your dentist to file teeth during a routine cleaning

Okay, I like my teeth. I have had braces in the past to straighten my teeth because they stuck out so far I could hardly close my mouth. And I have fairly big teeth. Now that they are straight and the braces are off my mouth closes easily. I had really long canines, which I thought were cool. But, every time I would go to the dentist for a routine cleaning, he would file them down without my permission. They're still long, but it seems that every time I went to the dentist, those two teeth would be shorter. Now they're really sensitive, like to cold and even wind, because of all the filing down he did. I've since quit this dentist for this reason among others. He's even flung instruments into my eyes a few times. If I had not had my eyes closed, I could very possibly be blind now. I basically had to rant about this and wish I could do something about it, but the damage is done.

And I do want to let others know about this dentist and what he did to me, but how would I go about that? Would I go to court?

canines are supposed to be really long. You can sue him for this.

Yep, and I did get a new dentist. But, only after a few times of him filing without permission. I wish I had done it sooner.

I doubt if any dentist would speak up against another one but I always sit in with my 14 year old son at the dentists. I wouldn't trust them NOT to put mercury (amalgam) into his mouth for a filling. Our dentist knows I'm staunchly against it so had to ask me to pay for a white composite one.

Ok well obviously you had a bad dentist. That happens a lot! But I will say that filing teeth is normal. I've had mine done once to make them perfectly straight in the front but the dentist was careful not to do too much so there was no sensitivity. The bottom line is that they shouldn't have done anything without your permission. Don't go back there and ask your new dentist if there is anything that they can do.

Yeah, it was horrible. I had no idea he was doing it until he had done it. No warning from him or anything. It made me so mad!
