Is it normal for women to binge?

I was talking to my Mom, and the phrase "normal binging" was brought up. I immediately started laughing, saying that binging isn't normal. She was adamant that it was, at least for women. I'm not too concerned about her, since her side of the family apparently has amazing metabolism, and she seems to be in good spirits lately. I don't know a lot of women, so the conversation put just enough doubt in my mind to put up an is it normal thread.

So, is it? Is binging a normal thing for women to do? Female answers only.

I would say it is when you are needing comfort and food=a level of comfort for you. If food is not comfort for you then no but I would say it is for a lot of people. If I am really stressed I don't like to eat at all, but if I am just kind of stressed or thinking to much I will eat to distract myself for a moment (relief). It is not a good coping mechanism but it is normal.

It depends on how you define a binge. Of course it's normal for everyone, not just women, to go out with friends have a few drinks and some pizza and not worry about your overall diet, assuming it's a once in a while treat, but I wouldn't consider that a binge, unless you view your diet in very restrictive terms.

I don't consider myself to be someone who "binges." Sure, I occasionally eat unhealthy things, but when I eat pizza or pasta with cream sauce or desert or something like that, I usually pair it with a big salad or veggie soup, or something healthy and filling. That way, I can eat the unhealthy foods I sometimes crave in a manageable portion. I never feel guilty about it, nor do I consider it a "binge."

    • I mean like eating an entire tub of icecream. Binging doesn't have anything to do with the quality of food you're eating, it has to do with the quantity. If you ate one plate of salad, for example, it's not binging. If you ate ten? Then you're binging.

I dont reccommend binging on salad. Way worse than binging on ice cream. Unkess you are lactose intolerant.

I think it's normal for anyone. When you have a bad day just say fuck it and drown yourself in your favorite food. Most Americans do this on Thanksgiving and other holidays. It may not be very healthy, but it is normal. And dont forget the stereotype of wating a lint of icecream when you beeak up with someone. That was probably what your mom was referring to.

Oh ok. Sorry for the confusion. People use that word so liberally nowadays. If you mean over eating a certain food or foods excessively, to the point of feeling sick, then no, I almost never do that.

I have eaten too much before, but that tends to happen when I'm extremely hungry and have been under eating for some reason (like when I'm broke). I tend not to binge though, not even on holidays, mostly because I eat a little bit of whatever I want when I crave it (just in moderation).

I binge eat almost everynight. I blame the munchies. Fortunately, my metabolism is also still fast. Last night I ate chicken teriyaki with rice and broccoli and 2 thin-ish slices of cheesecake. That was my midnight snack lmao.
