Is it normal for users to not want their gold gift?

I was pondering the idea giving the gift of gold to someone special here. They are compassionate and comic and have helped me immensely.
I'm not sure if buying them a gold membership is a safe approach now. There are members who are given gold who seem grateful when it is gifted to them. Then I saw two gold members complain about the person who gave it to them. They assumed the person gave it to them to buy their friendship and both said that nothing would ever make them be friends with that person, not even a gold membership.

How would you feel if you were to receive a gold membership from another person on the site?

Awesome! Give gold to me, please! My precious gold. 18
I have been gifted and like it. It is great, everyone should try it. 6
I have been gifted and didn't like it. It is nothing special. 0
I've had it (not gifted) and don't want it again. 0
Gold is for A-holes. 6
I think people who gift gold are buying friends. 1
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I got given it as a gift. I have no idea who from. I think it was a lovely gesture, even though I have no idea why they decided to do it.

When it runs out, I don't see myself getting it again, purely because I'm not really interested in most of the features, other than PM's. I don't have time atm to check the unmodded section other than weekends.

I've bought it for a few people. I may consider doing so again in the future. I do worry that perhaps they don't want it. I in no way feel that they are 'indebted' to me, and would be quite horrified if I were to find that they felt that way.

I don't see it as an attempt to 'buy' friendship, though I suppose some might use it that way :-S

i think it was giving to users with X amount of time (regular users) By UDI, aka management, so we could experiance it in attempt to have us buy afterward.

I have gotten it twice, once anonymously and once from a lovely person. I was thrilled both times to get it and I did not consider it a buying of friendship at all. Hell I didn't know one of them and the other was already my buddy. I have given it to people as well and they seem very grateful. Nothing wrong with gold, it is pretty cool.

It was given to me non-anonymously. I decided to pass the gesture on when it expired, and did it in the same manner it was done to me.

Why not give it anonymously? That way you can reward them without it being linked to you. I mean, the main thing is they they feel appreciated, right?

Umm... I don't know. Do you leave gifts at your friends' doors, ring the bell and run to quickly hide and see their reaction? :P

That is definitely the kind of thing I'd do, though.

          Did it/they remain anonymous?

            Nah :(

Probably shouldn't have made it look like a bomb, really.

            Ah retrospect.

I got mine as a gift and I was really happy when I got it. I love presents:P. I don't think I could ever see it as an attempt to buy my friendship, but maybe others will. Do you know the user well? That might help:).

I was anonymously gifted it once and I appreciated it. I never found out who it was, but if I knew I wouldn't considered it being the buying of a friendship.
I think it's rude to not want it unless the user has a good reason for the rejection.
