Is it normal for us to be on and off with talking?

I have a guy friend(he's 27 and i'm 25) we've known each other since 2005 we would talk all the time, then we sort of drifted apart. At the time i thought that was the end of that, but then in January of this year out of the blue we start talking again.

We texted a lot for 2 months, almost everyday and we hung out a few times. Then, it slowly stopped and we've gone back to our awkward commenting & liking on each other's stuff on instagram and twitter. We'll occasionally answer the other person if the comment warrants an answer, but it's kind of weird and awkward again.

Is this normal behavior for a guy, even as friends? Why do we keep going back to each other with years or months inbetween talking? It's like something keeps pulling us back towards each other. It's weird...

personally, this has happened to me too, and I got fed up with it and I was like "be real with me, I don't got time to be playing these kinda games," cause at the time I wanted to be with this guy, but then again I was having mixed feelings.. and he said that he was feeling the same way.. but we couldn't find a way to work so like, we'll hangout whenever we have the time, but usually it's just those drunk , confession kinda hanging out nights. Not much fun cause it's like a routine.
    random "let's hangout"
    hangout*
    have a few
    random confessions
    hooking up
    talking for a while.
then awkward "oh yeah," kinda friendships.
I find it normal.. I guess since all guys think they can come and go as they please
