Is it normal for two 5-year-old kids to try to "have sex"?

When I was about 5 I had a "boyfriend" of the same age. My memories are hazy but I remember he tried to French kiss me which I didn't like, and we looked at and explored each other's genitals a bit which I've been told is quite normal.

The thing that worries me is a couple of times we tried to "have sex". Both our parents had been very open with us about what sex was and we knew what went where, so we just casually tried it out. We were standing up and fully clothed, so we just got our parts out, tried (fairly unsuccessfully) to achieve penetration, gave up after a few minutes and that was it. It didn't seem like a big deal at the time, just a bit funny and naughty, and it seemed no different from acting out other grown-up things like getting married or giving birth.

Did anyone else ever have similar experiences? Is this something I should be worried about or does this fall under normal childhood experimentation?

    I never knew this was common. A daughter of my Mum's friend was very sexual and we'd kissed a few times, but there was this one time when she stopped over & things got freaky.

    My mum & sister, plus her mum & sister, were at a Backstreet Boys concert. My Nan was babysitting but she put us to bed early. All I can remember is the girl taking her PJs off, putting my flacid toddler dick in her mouth, I then went down on her before snogging for ages.

    It was weird, the few friends I did tell at school never believed me, and I honestly never thought other kids did such things.

      It sounds like that little girl might have been abused or seen porn somehow. I've done a bit of googling on this subject to find out if my own situation was normal and the general consensus is that it's perfectly normal and common for children to look at and touch each other's genitals out of curiosity, but it suggests something messed up is going on if they try to perform actual sex acts, because you have to question where they learnt how to do it.

      In my case I'd simply been told what sex was by my parents. think the boy knew a bit more than me, like how to french kiss, and I have to wonder how he got that information, but it could have just been from seeing teenagers in the park or something. I can't clearly remember whether he appeared to know about any other sex acts because it would have meant nothing to me at the time.

      It sounds like the girl you knew was exposed to something she shouldn't, though. You don't mention whether you knew about oral sex before this incident. How old were you both when this happened?

        We were both 5. I didn't know anything about oral sex, I just went with what she did to be honest.

    Kids experiment, sometimes they do strange things. This comes off as rather funny to me. I don't see a problem.

    Normal for little kids to explor/experiment with children of the same and opposite gender. Touching poking probbing even some licking is normal. But try and copy adult behavior isn't normal.

    I remember talking about sex at primary school age, however I remember seeming to think it was all about licking eachother all over especially the 'naughty' bits...turns out I wasn't completely wrong though lol, point is I had no idea about the whole concept of penetration at that point so perhaps your parents were too open at too young an age?

      Yes I think they were. I vaguely remember asking where babies came from at the age of about 4 and my mother gave me an explanation that involved "...and he puts his willy in her fanny" (willy and fanny are common English slang for penis and vagina) which was a bit vulgar and probably more information than necessary.

    That is horrible OO 5 year olds should not be trying to do this. However you were five no on could blame you for imatating grown ups .

    It's Normal to for children to experiment, but I'm not sure if trying to go that far is normal.
