Is it normal for southerners to have an accent?

Is it normal to wonder if people from the south or the bronx or any other state, to question their accent? I mean, are they born with these accents? I heard a woman from texas boast proudly that shes from texas and the way she said it, is her accent normal or is it forced, or did she grow up to learn to use it in everyday life??

Anyone?

accents are different wherever you go. they're not usually forced, thats just how they speak. to them, you're the one with the weird accent :)

You have an accent to other people too, and you were born with it. Everyone is born the way they talk because that's how they were raised and what they grew up to know. In some cases, an accent can grow on a person but it can never get very thick.

  • Well, you learn language from your family, parents, house, school, and basically your surroundings. So if everyone in that area talks like that, chances are that's that you're going to learn.

You learn to speak from who you're around. I'm Southern and have an accent. It isn't forced, I can't speak any other way naturally. I don't particularly like my accent, either. Lol.

I'm not exactly sure how accents developed, but everybody has one. It's not forced, you just naturally talk the way you do because you grew up around people who talk that way. I don't really like my accent, it's plain and boring lol

I'm from the south and I've been told I do not have an accent. I've noticed that for some of my friends, their accents will change (become more pronounced) when they're with family or when they're drinking.

Everybody has an accent. Accents are in the ear of the beholder; someone somewhere will think that your voice is weird. Equally, nobody notices their own accent because they get used to it or it changes so slowly. Accents can change if you move to a different area, for most people the accent will slowly change.

I'm from Texas but I don't have an accent. I think it's because I live in a metropolitan area though and no one around me has an accent either. If you go to the rural areas though they have accents.

Northerners have an accent too. It is just where you grow up, not forced at all.
