Is it normal for someone to take offense to this?

If someone said something like: I am surprised you're interested in me when you can do better. Would you take offense to that? Someone I know took serious offense to that, and dumped his girlfriend.

Maybe he just flat out agreed with her and was grateful she brought it to his attention.

    • I didn't get the full story, but now I have it. It turns out it's because she had low self-esteem and he was tired of her insulting herself all the time. He just took offense to the fact that no matter how many times he reassured her, she just said he had bad taste and she was too ugly for him.

Ugh, that comment is too funny. But I can't show that I enjoy a comment here. It's not very grumpy of me. QUANDARY!

  • "What? You think I am too good for you? You fucking bitch! How dare you think less of yourself compared to me, you cunt!? Out of respect and love for you I am ending this because I can't be with someone who thinks they aren't good enough, you moronic bitch!"

    Ah, I crack myself up.

He probably thought that she was, in her own way, trying to tell him that she wasnt that interested.

"But I tried so hard to look for someone!"
    "You can do better!"
    *sniffle*

That may be offensive to the one who LIKES the other.

    "I love you."
"I'm surprised you're interested in me when you can do better."

That just means that the other person doesn't think they're good enough for the liker.

Maybe he had more reasons to break it off.

Sounds like she just had really low self esteem, but he's probably insecure too.

Maybe she made him realise that he can really do better
but its still a cruel thing to do

I see.. That can really ruin a relationship. If you tell someone you're ugly all the time, they might start seeing your flaws with more intensity. Also, no man wants to be with a woman who doesnt trust her own looks. She will strike them as being weak minded

No. Sounds like she is better off without him.

Well, I'm a chick but if I were a dude, that would kind of confuse me and I'd probably break up with them because they sound like they really don't care for me anyway. I'm sure there was a better way to say that so saying it like that would push me away unless I knew them for a while before they said it, of course. :P
