Is it normal for someone to eat their jacket?

When I was in middle school, there was this guy who would wear the same jacket everyday and would always chew on the left sleeve. Day by day, the jacket sleeve would shrink in length until it almost reached his elbow.

    That doesn't sound normal. I know people chew on their jacket laces, but to actually eat a part of your clothing is too much.
