Is it normal for pink & blue to be a gender specific colors?

I mean...They are both just as much colors as every other color out there. I don't understand who determined what colors represent femininity and masculinity for the rest of us. It's like we can't have our own opinion about pink anymore or ever again because it's already been determined to be a "girly" color by someone we never knew who most likely died ages ago. More importantly I don't understand how it's become so well socially acceptable to the point where we will pass it on to our children and teach that pink is for girls and blue is for boys. Personally, I don't feel like I need someone else to opiniate what color goes where for me. I'm curious, what do you guys think about this?

I think you should like whatever color you like. Placing rules on things.... especially these kinds of things is crazy and a waste of energy.

If you don't like it the best way to challenge the tradition would be to ignore it.

Just throwing it out there, in the early 1900s, pink was for boys and blue was for girls.

Well, pink ties are in fashion again, But honestly.. would you have taken CEO Steve Jobs of Apple computer seriously if he had a hot pink iphone and wore neon pink pants? Some things are just what they are for a reason, I guess.

"As part of this differentiation, there seems to have been an effort to establish characteristic colors for girls and boys. But it took decades to develop a consensus on what those colors were. For years one camp claimed pink was the boys' color and blue the girls'. A 1905 Times article said so, and Parents magazine was still saying it as late as 1939. Why pink for boys? Some argued that pink was a close relative of red, which was seen as a fiery, manly color. Others traced the association of blue with girls to the frequent depiction of the Virgin Mary in blue.

Research on color preference in monkeys has shown females prefer warmer colors like pink and red — supposedly an infant primate's pink face brings out its mother's nurturing instincts. A color preference study of Caucasian and Chinese men and women showed both Caucasian and Chinese women strongly preferred red and pink, while Caucasian men strongly preferred blue and green. However, the Chinese men showed a broader range, with many picking red and pink — possibly because in China red is considered lucky. To me that suggests the biology argument is pretty weak. Sure, my favorite color is blue. But it's entirely possible I say that because I was always told I should."

I'm a female and I've been in love with blue for a long time.

This is a good post. I hate how society makes a big deal about these colours. There's a big toy store in Britain that recently got rid of the colour system. I think other places should follow suit.

    I don't like pink and love blue, I guess I'm a boy.

    I agree with you though.

Much can be discovered about a person by which colour(s) are their favourite.
    I'm a male, and I like blue.
    I like females in peach.
