Is it normal for people to be so poor at spelling?

It seems to me (just my personal observation) that spelling and grammar have gotten worse in recent years. Is it normal to be irritated by this downward trend in proper spelling and grammar? Or should I just accept the fact that the world is changing and poor spelling is socially acceptable now?

i have slight dyslexia and i personally don't think it has anything to do with it. dyslexia doesn't prevent you from using proper English and grammar. and that's why there's spell check! heck, most programs these days just autocorrect.

Yeah it irritates me too, especially when I am the one who made a mistake and there's no way to edit it.

It's annoying. I don't mind standard abbreviaitions, or even the occasional texting abbreviations (4, U, 2, brb, LOL) so much, but phonetic spelling makes me ANGRY. My wife has a friend who teaches third grade and reading her facebook postings and texts makes me want to slap the crap out of her (especially since she complains about her black students speaking Ebonics).

  • As long as I'm doing it right I couldn't care less on how people spell. Maybe they have other goals in life that don't include being a grammar freak .-.

It is super irritating that most people sound so ignorant these days! Hurts my head reading/listening to them on a daily basis.

Texting and shorthand has seeped into our modern language; it should have never been that way. People at least need to learn how to use their browser's built in spell check for crying out loud!
