Is it normal for people to affect you this strongly?

I've noticed how when I'm around some people, I start to feel unhappy, tired, nervous, hopeless and depressed after a while. On the other hand, when around some others, I feel lighthearted, intrigued, confident and good. Is it normal that some people can affect you so deeply negatively? (Of course these are extremes and many people are just neutral.) This confuses me since the ones making me feel so bad are my family and I thought family is supposed to be a safe place. I tend to just avoid strangers who are overly depressing.

I thought I hated my family and they were all evil people conspiring to make my life a living hell till I was 18 and moved out. As soon as I got some space I realized that they loved me and were only looking out for me. My family and I can remain friends so long as we don't spend more than 5 days together. It seems like a dysfunctional relationship but it works. My relationships with people seem to work the less time I get to spend with them.

Yep this happens. It's the ties that bond you that have this affedt on you.

I like the way you write.

Yes, it is normal for you to be receptive to the moods/general dispositions of others. Not everyone is though.
