Is it normal for parents to dislike hugging?

My parents have never been people who show their affection by hugging or kissing or whatever. I remember hugging them as a kid, once, but that got a strange reaction from them so I never did it again. I thought this was normal, until I started to notice how many friends at my school have their mom or dad hugging them before they leave. I know I shouldn't be, but it makes me envious.

Maybe my parents simply dislike hugging? Is that normal?

My whole fam is the same way..no one ever says I love you, or hugs-nothing! It's affected me, because now I'm affraid to show any affection towards friends, sig. others, etc.

My dad is like that. He's pretty cold. I guess it's just their personalities. But yes, it's normal for them to just not like showing physical affection towards their child and it's also normal to be envious of your friends.

I love hugging! It's so relaxing and comfortable! My parents don't like to hug for some reason, but I still hug them anyway :), if I were you, I would hug them all the time even if they didn't like it, unless they didn't like it so much they told you to stop. Just wondering, have you ever asked if your parents hated to hug? Maybe in that situation they were in an uncomfortable position and couldn't really feel the awesomeness of an awesome hug!

My parent is exactly the same, but I don't think it's normal. She's never shown any physical affection which I think is odd for a parent, but perhaps some people just don't like it.

Human contact is imperative to our vitality. Here in Hawaii, it's customary to hug when we greet and even meet people for the first time. My heart goes out to you my friend. Just remember how you feel and be different with your children. In fact you can just start being affectionate with your friends and people for that matter. Just start with a smile. But careful not to impose on anothers space. Many hugs and all the aloha I send to you.

That's so sad. I feel for you. I always hug my kids. Sometimes they get annoyed by it. Other times they seek me out for a hug. They are adults now, but I still hug them.

  • I really don't know. I don't think it's normal but then again, I come from a family that gives lots of hugs. Maybe you're right and they just don't like it or maybe they weren't hugged as children and think that's the best way to parent. They might think that by showing little "huggy-touchy" affection they get a better kid in grades and attitude.
In other words, Im not sure why. I guess the only way to find out would be to talk to them.
