Is it normal for older people to feel that society is in decline?

Do older people automatically idealize the past, and find many changes to be negative ones, just because it's not what they are used to? Or is it that a lot of people are just pessimistic these days, whatever their age?

  • This old lady came through my line (I am a cashier) and I thought I heard her say "All in one bag." She had some eggs and a SMALL carton of whipping cream, so I put the eggs on the bottom of the bag and the cream next to it (it is not uncommon for people to ask for everything in one bag, so I didn't think anything of it).

She flipped the fuck out. "Have you ever been taught how to properly bag? Do you seriously bag like that?" I tried to explain that I misheard her, but she just ignored me, and persisted to educate me on how to properly do my job.

"I am so glad I'm not from your generation" blah blah. I wanted to shout, I'm glad I'm not from your stingy ass generation you old hag, but that would not have been nice.

I think its normal that old people don't like this society. People these days want to put other light things in with eggs, which are deceptively strong?? Nooooo! On a more serious note, I think some of their feelings stem from nostalgia.

Sorry for sounding like an asshole in this comment.

There are ancient Greek texts thousands of years old that complain about the "youth of today" - yes, really! Nothing changes :)

To some extent. I am one of the older almost 55. I think its normal to remember the good things about the past. As far as accepting change that depends on the individual. I have had 3 different careers and moved 3 times in 4 years and have accepted it well. Change is part of life, if anything I accept it easier now because I am used to it and older and more mature. At the same time I dont put a lot of concern or emphasis on texting 10 times a minute either. I rather enjoy my surroundings and family and enjoy talking to people directly.

I think its normal for the most part.Alot of older probably see how today's society is a world apart from the society of their generation and don't understand what they're unfamilar with; so naturally they would not like it. On the other hand there are some that are genuinely interested in seeing change, and adapting to whats new for example my grandma is always texting me on her mobile and loves watchin keeping up with the kardashians with me bless her lol. I guess it just depends on the person themselves, their preferences and how open minded they are.

Normal, but not necessirily correct. People just dislike change. Also somethings have obviously got worse over time, and others have got better. Many people only concentrate on the things that have got worse and form and opinion based on that.
