Is it normal for my therapist to give up?

So I had been seeing my psychotherapist for over 6 months now. I have been seeing him about body image issues. Long story short, here we are over 6 months later and he has specifically told me that we shouldn't continue therapy. And not because I am better, but because he feels I can't be helped. And I agree, he hasn't helped me at all. Is this normal? So therapists do this for many patients?

Maybe he can't help you but someone else can.
Maybe he can't help you because all he can think about during your sessions is "I want you. I want you so bad. I want you so fucking bad I can't wait to sniff your chair after you leave."
Or it could be plenty of other legitimate reasons but don't give up. Good Luck and have a pleasant day.

I hope he at least gave you some suggestions about other therapists or other therapies which you could test out?

I guess it would be good if you could find a therapist who specialises in your particular issues but I would've thought he should've known that from the start.

I see one counsellor sporadically who told me from the beginning that she doesn't feel fully competent to help me with csa/rape issues, so for those I have counselling at a Centre against Sexual Assault and see her when I need to about other issues.

Better than stringing you along with something that isn't working for you, to milk you of your money.

Perhaps a different therapist or approach will help?

Well...maybe he wasnt the theripist for you.
Not every person that a theripist comes into contact with can they help...also he might not be able to help you but that doesnt meen someone else cant.
If i were you I would look into other people.

Im sorry I dont have suggestions on who to see.

Maybe ask your old theripist if he knows someone you could try. or just start looking up ones in your area...you can go for some test sesions and see if they are right fot you or not.

  • Therapists are a bit stupid if you ask me. Obviously not all but the ones I had were. One of them came to the weird conclusion that I would make a good Buddhist...I just stared at her when she said that and then brushed it off. Some of them have no clue.

One thing I've learnt about being a unofficial therapist, and a victim of mental illness myself, is that you have to also be in a position to be helped. So help out the next therapist - listen to what they say and try and think of some discipline of your own. If you have body image issues, a quick-fix is telling yourself everyday that you look perfect as you are, not just listening to a therapist say it, if you know what I mean?
Good luck and I hope you feel better someday soon.
