Is it normal for my parents to force-feed me soap?

I'm wondering if this is a normal punishment for cursing. They used to force me to swallow liquid hand soap when I cursed in middle school. Before that, they had a leather belt they would use to whip me on my back, ass, and thighs when they felt I needed to be punished (it was for all sorts of stuff, I didn't get grounded in elementary school, I got the belt instead, probably at least once a week.) Occasionally my mom would hit or kick me, or pull my hair. They think that this is all normal and everyone disciplines their kids this way. Is this normal?

    That is pretty cruel. I'm glad that my parents never did that. My parents have never cared about my language at all, so that's quite the opposite to your situation. In my country, what your parents did might be classed as abuse, depending on how hard the beatings were.

    It's possible that this was how their parents treated them and because of the time they were children, it was acceptable. Now, it really isn't.

    I was that child too - although I knew better than to ever swear! Strange that you never learnt from the belt to watch your language.

    As a teenager, I took my brother to the bathroom and stuck a bar of soap in his mouth for swearing. As a result, I hate soap under my nails and can't eat cheese at the thought of the soap texture on MY teeth. However, better the soap to save him from the choke chain my mom used to use on us!

    It depends what you prefer, they say children don't remember getting beaten as long as the child was in the wrong and 'deserved' it. Otherwise, you could have years of mental and emotional abuse where parents tell you they hate you. It takes energy to discipline your children - and so many parents don't bother any more. Some just sit and pray their kids move out ASAP!

    I've seen that soap method in movies but in my culture, it's normal to get beatings.

    I think it depends on how old you are really? I never remember my parents hitting my growing up but both my parents used to get the leather belt and my grandparents slightly worst. I think in this day and age it's awful but back in the day it was pretty normal (not sure about the soap thing though)

    I suggest that you inform one of your teacher or one person you really trust..That's not normal..You must do something as soon as possible!

    My mom brushed my teeth with soap once as punishment. It was disgusting! But, it was only once and I don't even remember what led up to that punishment.
