Is it normal for my malay/indian friend to identify as black?
She told me she identified with Whitney Houston because "she was also black"? Since when does black mean anyone who isn't white?

I think it's normal, but the words won't come to explain why. I just don't think it's weird to identify as something other people wouldn't expect you to, I guess. Or maybe you just misunderstood her and she was referring to non-white people in general. Or maybe she thinks of herself both as being Malay/Indian as well as black. Black isn't a synonym for African, and people can identify with more than one ethnicity.
Maybe she does it because blacks are cooler and have more style than Indians or Malays.
Ouch, It IS totally NOT NORMAL. Malaysians is not black.I mean, not all of them are black. Malay peoples who live in the east of Malaysia were almost all of them who had white/fair skin (because some of eastern malays married with swedish, american and chinese, so their child born in mix blooded)
Blame the media. For years they have portrayed the world as only black and white, thankfully this is slowly starting to change.
