Is it normal for my dreams/goals to be slipping away?

Last year this time I was really moving! I had a decent job, started a business making good money and I was planning to travel to Europe last October. Then gradually, I lost my job, most of my money was spent on hospital bills (I gotten sick, physically and mentally), the business lost momentum. And now I'm here broke with card debt and applying for a job at a grocery store. It feels difficult to get back on my feet and my goals seem like their getting further out of reach. Should I give up and just get a job a mcdonalds and live a normal life? Btw I'm 21

First you must figure out whether your dreams are realistically achievable or they are not.
There is no point in having them,if there is just no way you'll ever get to make them come true.
The more you think about them, the more you try,the more you just find an invalicable obstacle, the more dfficult it gets to live without them and with what you actually have or can do.So I guess your solution is adapting your dreams to what you can actually do without expecting to get your originary dreams come true.
You basically need a back up plan.A plan B.
Do not expect the rewards you were hoping to get by making your dreams come true.Lower your expectations. But,keep the original dreams in a little box, away from who could steal them from you, just in case you get a chance to make them come true,or to pass them on to somebody you care about who possibly can.
    That's all.

Does that mean you agree with jodyjo and emily doll coz you seem to be saying the same thing. If so, a thumbs up for either of them will do.

noooo...I'm not agreeing with them...I said something completely different.

I said:Put your dreams in a safe..make up new ones you can achieve.. etcetera..
        Are you dumb or something?

Could you not have just said that simply without rambling illiterally?

I also wonder if you have ever read the very top of this page? It says we are here to help each other so PLAY NICE! You swearing in all of your posts is breaking the rules and is of no benefit to anyone - except yourself, I assume. Because of this, I for one (of many) don't read your posts anymore.

P.S. I am far from dumb - although I am deaf!

Best thing to do is not settle for a job u hate.. U don't want to get stuck. You re ambitious and broke at 21, hey that's normal! Set a new goal.. What do u WANT to do, then do it! If u don't have kids it's all about u right now and ur life adventure. Up and down. Up and down. That's just how it's going to be! When I was 22 I moved to new York to be a fashion designer with no money.. That was a FAIL haha. Now I'm 25 and I work in advertising doing brand management (another dream of mine) in Miami. Of course it was HARD not making it the first try, but now everything is looking up up up :)

It's not easy if you have to let go of your dreams. If you can bear it, you might have to set them aside for a while. When I was 18 I wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle .... and ride it across the USA, Europe, all the way to Saudi Arabia to go on the pilgrimage to Mecca.

20 years later, and the closest I got was renting a scooter for a few weekends to toodle around the city. Maybe I can make that big trip by the time I'm 50.

My husband is 41 and we just went through this. In this economy it's very normal!

  • You are still so YOUNG!

You have a good 40-50 years left for you to reach your goals. Why would you give up at 21. Start making 5, 10, and 20 year goals. Imagine who you WANT to be at 30, 40, and 50. Once you are able to visualize that, start writing a list of steps you will need to make to get there: don't be afraid to make it too detailed.

A lot of people your age feel that way, and they typically feel like that until their late-twenties/early-thirties. That's why older people never want to be young again, aside from having an energetic, fit and reliable body.

Take it easy, keep trying, get out and travel while your still young. Good luck.
