Is it normal for my dad to be like this?

Is it normal for my dad to buy things and never use them? He so far bought 3 fourwheelers a dirtbike a tractor and about 30 or so guns. He never uses anything he buys. The guns are all spit shined and kept in his cabinets, the four wheelers and tractor have been sitting out in the garage for about 5 years now without being used, sitting in the same spot covered with a white bed sheet. The batteries have died multiple times.

Anytime you try and talk to him about his problem which I think is a type of ocd or something, he makes up lies like "you're making my stomach hurt" or just acts like a baby and pouts or gets cranky. My mother has tried several times to get him help or just to even talk to him about it, but it never gets anywhere. He thinks he is normal and will never change and he won't go to a doctor or psychiatrist or try any medications.

Is there anything I could do to help him at all or just let my mother deal with his craziness and let her be miserable?

PS: She already tried leaving him once and it didn't work (physical fighting).

  • Sounds like a typical hoarding problem. Dragon is correct that meds will not help hoarding. His hoarding is very mild compared to some people I know.

Make sure this collecting doesn't turn in to hoarding. I think the only expert he should talk to is a therapist, they can help him change his pattern of thinking. These kind of problems are not what psychiatric medicaton is for.

He sounds like a hoarder. He really needs to see a therapist that specialises in this condition. He shouldn't see a psychiatrist because they do not believe in treating the whole person, instead they give you medications which cause more problems than help. A therapist will try to get down to the main root of the problem.

If he doesn't want to go get help, you can try to get together an intervention. Don't sign up to one of those hoarding shows because like psychiatrists they don't get down to the root problem.
