Is it normal for my cousin to weight 140 pounds?

My cousin, who is 13 and is named Riley, is a loveable girl. She's very active and wants to join the soccer team. I mean, she's so active that she dances in her room every day!

Riley has bit of a weight problem. She's 140 pounds. Well, her weight keeps on changing from 141 to 140 and today it was 139. She's trying to eat better and she doesn't have more than one helping after dinner. I'm afraid that her weight will not make her grow up.

Is this normal? For a cousin, i am very worried.

That is a little heavy but not too bad.

That's totally normal going just by body-mass index (she's at a 24 which is in normal range), but she may be slightly overweight putting her age into account.

It's definitely not something she would need to stress about, so please don't let her become obsessed with her weight. The world already has far too many teenage girls who are totally preoccupied with getting thinner.

Encourage her to eat better and stay active, but make sure she's still being healthy - not just in terms of her body but her attitude as well.

You seem to have it under control well with your obvious knowledge of nutrition :) haha

She has lost like between 20 and 30 pounds, which is good for her. She used to be 160 but now she weighs 134.

you also have to take her body frame (is she large boned or not - an easy way to gauge is by looking at her wrists and how thick or thin they look). also, if she's really active, she may be very muscular. muscle weighs a lot more. my cousin is the same height and weight as me, but she's smaller since she's so muscular and surfs all the time.

My cousin's wrists are very small. I could touch my two fingers around and touch the tips (you know, when you take your thump and index finger and wrap them around my cousins wrist and I could touch the tips). So my cousins wrists are very thin and small.

ok, then she's probably small boned. still, she's within the healthy bmi range (barely). if she were large boned, i'd say it was positively nothing to worry about.

i still wouldn't worry too much as she may be about to have a growth spurt (a lot of girls that age get a little chunky before growing taller), or it may be mostly muscle (does she look overweight, or does she look athletic/well-toned?). just keep an eye on it, but as one of the previous commentors said, you don't want to give the poor girl an eating disorder.

if she gains 20lbs or something (without growing any taller) i'd talk to her about it then. for now, you can just try to influence her to eat better/more healthful foods by saying things like "this will give you more energy and help you be better at sports than that fast-food" or something along those lines.

Well, she does have a gut on her but in my opinion she doesn't look like she would weigh around 140 pounds. This morning she called me to tell me that she lost another pound, which makes her 138. But the weird thing is that she had this blizzard at dariy queen last night and she still lost weight.

Believe me, she has told me that she needs to lose weight and that this is not the right weight for her age. Riley has been eating better and has been excersisng (sorry for misspell) and is losing weight. But she have been eating right. She also told me that she can have one bad day but not load up on the fatty sugary foods.

That depends on her height, her genetics, and her composition. How tall is she?

  • I weigh 145 and am 5'10 soo if she's around my height I wouldn't recommend her trying to lose weight. Everyones body is different though... even if we knew her height we wouldn't be able to help you that much
