Is it normal for my brother to wear the same thing every day ?

My brother who is in high school has worn the same outfit every day since the beginning of the year.He wears a black t-shirt with a black fleece coat. Even though it is now averaging 60 degrees Fahrenheit out, he still insists on wearing it every day to school, even indoors. One morning, I hid it to see what he'd do, and he freaks out, calls our mother and says "I DON'T GO TO SCHOOL WITHOUT MY COAT!" and then refuses to go to school that day.He was unable to find a way to deal with it. Needless to say, this has both enraged and puzzled me greatly. I figure he has extremely low self-esteem and needs to wear it to feel safe, which he is too fucking old to be doing. I have tried to ask him why he does this, but he gets extremely defensive, changes the subject and accuses me of wearing the same thing every day, which is untrue.
So, is this normal?

Not normal. When I was younger, I had a roommate who used to wear the same outfit every day. He had only two changes of clothing, both the same identical outfit. He wasn't poor either, he just "couldn't" wear anything but his one type of outfit.

He was the kind of guy, I was always afraid he was going to go postal or something. Hole up in a belltower with a high powered rifle, that kind of thing. Not just my impression, everyone who knew him felt the same way. They were like, Galen, why don't you move out of that apartment before you end up as a statistic?

    • When you guys broke up, did he take it badly?

Not really. I did eventually move out of the apartment, largely for the reasons mentioned. (Oh, and did I say, he kept (legal) guns and ammo in his bedroom, and was an expert marksman?) Our paths occasionally crossed for some years afterward, and he was always wearing the exact same kind of outfit, and everyone who knew him was always picking up bad "mass shooter" vibes off of him. But he never went postal, never actually did anything, so he just drifted along gradually becoming weirder and weirder, and less and less able to function in life. I believe some time after we last met, he did eventually come to the attention of social services.

Anyhow, he left me with the strong impression that rigid insistence on wearing the same thing every day does not exactly go hand in hand with being normal.

        • He would come to the attention of social services or law enforcement at some point. I'm sad to say it, but people are people.
