Is it normal for my boyfriend to do this?

My boyfriend will say something nice to me like "You look great today". It will make me feel really good about myself...For about five seconds, then he will say something like "but if you were blond you'd be even better". Is it normal for him to say something nice then something mean straight after? He does this with pretty much every nice comment he gives me.

    "You look good today."
    "Aw, thanks, sweetheart."
"It'd be better if you were blonde."
    "Haha! You're funny!"
    "Thanks, babe!"
"But it'd be better if you try some other humor. Old jokes getting old."

  • Your BF is a douchebag.

    Find another one.

One who thinks you're perfect just the way you are.

Seriously? Maybe he's just trying to express his preference with sublety.

      He's trying, failing, but trying.
No reason to break off a relationship, gosh. Your relationships must last for very short periods.

Maybe he thinks that it's funny? He probably doesn't expect you to take it seriously, he means it in a jokey way. Maybe you can show him that it hurts you, and you don't think it's funny. Or just tell him that you don't like it when he does this. I doubt he'd be mean like that on purpose.

Guys still think that to keep a girl under their control, ya gotta be cruel and nice. So he makes you feel good and then becomes an asshole. it makes u try and look better, act better and be what he wants. dont be what he wants be yourself. do the same to him but not in an obvious way. say " oh i like your shift. and then ""under your breath"" so he can see. say would look better if u were actually ripped. and see how he reacts. dont say how does it feel. let him dwell on it. see if he becomes worried. or just laughs and shakes it off. may reveal the real feelings behind how he feels about you. no man should say shit like that to woman nor a woman to a man. but play his little game and see how things pan out
    :-)

Well, if he keeps saying that I think you should say something back too. Say. Oh you look very handsome today but you would look great if..... . Find something to criticise him too, then he will get a taste of his own medicine. What a TWAT!

      ...For that?

Your relationships must die off quickly.

Next time he pulls that shit say something like
"Your dick is amazing...but it'd be so much better if it were bigger"
"You're great in bed...now if only you could give me an actual orgasm"

You're just expressing your preference like he is. Give him a taste of his own medicine.

Some guys just like to tease or joke around. It has nothing to do with keeping you under control, neither is he a jerk.

He's just trying to be funny, and if I were you, I'd go along with it.

BUT, if it REALLY bothers you, tell him that. Like, not in a jokey way, but tell him you REALLY don't want him to say that, and that you understand that he might think you can't take a joke.

Either that, or tell him some overdramatic traumastory involving blondes.

Maybe complimenting you makes him feel a bit lame so he has to make some douchey joke afterwards. He just sounds a bit immature.

OMG, this exactly happened to me! I feel so ashamed I actually went blonde for ex-asshole. He was the same way until i went blonde so he could shutup. Lose him, he just going to keep putting you down with passive aggressive behavior.

  • So he's not confident enough to find a blond girlfriend then ? Not saying they're better, but in his perception, they seem to be. Leave his ass and tell him "you like a blond so much you're free to get one :) byee!!!"

How can you be with someone for over twenty years and don't recall getting a compliment from them..? That's rather odd actually.
