Is it normal for my boss to treat me this friendly?

I was about to make this a poll, but I need real comments and advice. To start off, I am a twenty one year old woman from the Dominican Republic and I used to live in Florida. So, four months ago after moving to Virginia from Florida, I was extremely desperate for work and finally found it at this book store.

My bad feelings started at the interview when my future boss asked me some very demanding and personal questions. I looked rather cowardly and fidgety, so he just laughed and asked me, "Am I really that scary?"

I looked away, frightened, then he scribbled a couple of words and told me he'd forgive my shy disposition because he liked me. The next day, he called me out of the blue telling me he needed me up there today.

He hadn't even told me I was hired before then! When I got there, the store had just opened but no customers had shown up just yet. So, he just chatted with me for a long time until someone came in. Then, after they left, I was invited to some get together at my boss' home on the 14th of January. I told him I had to help my grandmother take some items to the dump, but he insisted I come afterwards.

Should I go, and is it normal for your boss to want to be your friend outside of work?

    • I feel creepy about it but maybe it's just me. Maybe it's because we're total strangers then he just starts trying to get under my skin really early.

Honestly this one sounds fine to me. I've been to a lot of book stores and all of the smaller ones ice been to (non large chain) have had owners that were there and genuinely just nice people.

If agree with the others that you may want to have someone with you at first but he seems fine to me.

We need more info like what kind of questions he asked you in the interview and what kind of stuff did you chat about together. On the one hand this guy may just be friendly and you are over-reacting or he may be a rapist, it's hard to say without more information.

    • It's just the fact that none of it pertained to the job. It was just random chit chat. Like at the interview, he started to digress and ask me about which movies I had seen that are out now and which restaurants are my favorite and about my accent and what it's like living in Dominican Republic then invited me to go with him in one sitting. Then random chit chat the next day followed by "I'm also having a get together at my place on the 14th. Will you be there?"

I just don't become out-of-workplace friends with my boss.

Do you actually work there? Have you signed a contract of employment? Do you get paid?

        • Yes. Signed them that day I came in. Very unprofessional if you ask me.

            Yeah it's called sexual harassment.

            • It doesn't feel sexual but maybe I'm wrong?

He's a bit too friendly. My advice is to go to the get-together and bring someone with you.
