Is it normal for my boss to do this?

One of my co workers recently had a close friend their's pass away, and they found out yesterday that the funeral was moved to today.but our manager insisted on badgering them to show up to work, even though they are very clearly not in any condition to work right now. This situation really doesen't sit right with me and I'm not sure how to feel about this.

Some companies care little about their employees. For them, its normal.

I once called my supervisor at one company to tell him that I would be late because a friend had died. My supervisor told me to take the day off, that he did not want to see me at all that day - and then asked what was on my schedule that someone else could cover.

Another company I worked at I already knew how things would be - so I just called in and told them I needed to take a PTO day for personal reasons.

Why should you feel anything about it? It happened to a co-worker not you. Your company is not your best friend and they have an agenda which doesn't revolve around you or your co-workers. If you don't like what happened at work, then quit. Then go work someplace that doesn't trigger you. Just like people, companies are all different.
