Is it normal for my 16 yr. old niece to be dating a 22 yr. old?

I just found out about 2-3 hours ago that my 16 yr. old niece is dating a 22 yr. old!? What do you think? I mean I accept her choice, but only because she is extremely smart and will be graduating next year. She told me that they've been dating since April 25, 2010, which means that when she was 14 he was 20. She is actually pretty mature for her age, but I mean is it really normal? Would you all just give me feedback on what you think about it?

How did she get from age 14 to age 16 in less than six months? That 22 year old had better watch out. If he stays with her a few more years, she'll be a pensioner!

there a guy once who put up a question here about him being 22 and his girl being 16. anyway, legal or not, there'S still a big difference between a 16 year old and a 22 year old though. 6 years is nothing but at THAT age, yes.

16 is the age of sexual consent here in the UK. No legal issue.

It's unusual, but I'm a 21 year old guy and I've seen 16 year old girls who give the impression that they're older maturity-wise - physically and emotionally. I've also seen guys my age who look like 16 year olds and act like them too.

The line is blurred. The bit that's a little dodgy is that she was 14 when he met her. That is quite young compared to a 20 year old. As long as they're both content, it should be OK, just be wary.

hey the guy is creepy, probably immature too. but that doesn't mean he should be rejected by someone he's compatible with.

maybe he's too immature to be with girls his age. I certainly wouldn't choose to be celibate if I were in that predicament

I dont believe this story if after only 6 months she jumped from 14 to 16.

Age is a number society gets too hung up on. If those two click as a couple, let it be. If they have stayed together for two years it would seem that they at least get alone just fine.

I don't think it's helthy for her, that being said, a friend of mine did the same and they ended up getting married after dating for 5 yrs. but they are both had Autism.

It certainly isn't legal if they're having sex (which they are)

What's the legal age of the country/state you live in?

If they've been together for two years now and nothing terrible has happened then you can conclude two things: 1) She's smart enough to take care of herself and 2) He obviously likes her and respects her because it would have ended by now if these two things weren't happening. Stay cool - you can't expect her to stay home forever.

Age is only a number but do you really believe a 16 year old is mature at that age? Can't she just be friends with this kid till she's legal? I mean if he truly loves her, he shouldn't have a problem waiting till shes 18.

that's silly if they love eachother why would they wait? the law is nothing but a book. and one should never let a book dictate how to live their lives. specially one as literal and unforgiving as the law.

But the legal issue depends on which state you live in. At 16 I dated a 21 year old...which is amusing because my parents were mad strict. He was a perfect gentleman and boyfriend. I think it depends on the mindset of the individuals involved.
