Is it normal for most responders on is it normal to be rude?

I have came to this site a couple of times to ask questions because I don't have anyone else to talk to about certain things. I am terminally ill, unable to work and friends slowly tend to forget about you when you're too sick to hang out with them anymore. I have a few family members to talk to and ask questions or advice from but sometimes you just need or want an outsiders perspective on things. I've tried asking questions on this site a couple of times but it seems like the people here just want to kick you when you're already down. That's really a bummer if that's all this site is about.

You must be new to the internet. Welcome.

People in general are fairly judgemental and quick to criticism despite their own flaws, not just on this website. Just try to take the bad with a grain of salt and appreciate the handful of kind people. The internet is like a giant yard sale- you're gonna find a whole load of crap before you get to the good stuff, but the good stuff was worth it. =)
    I love yard sales. <3

I think people are generally respectful when expressing their opinions here, unless it's a dumb or offensive post. Most people are sympathetic and will offer advice to people in need if they can.

However, you can't expect a virtual room full of anonymous people being asked random questions to always be good unfortunately. You take the risk, really. Sometimes it sucks, other times it pays off. I'd say it's unfair to characterise the IIN community as one which 'kicks people when they're down.' But that's just my experience.

People on the Internet will find any excuse to treat others like crap. It's because they wouldn't have the guts to say those things in real life or else they'd get punched in the face.

One of my cousins is terminally ill so it makes me especially angry that people would be so heartless towards someone in your position.

When I read of a perfectly healthy person with a roof over their head, plenty of food to eat, clean water to drink and wash in, school or work available, enough money to have a computer (and the time to come on IIN) and an internet connection, speaking of how pointless and terrible their life is, I get a tad upset. How can these spoiled people fall into depression and complain when there are so many on this planet who have none of those things and struggle for survival each and every second of their lives? At least the complainers here have choices; they are only lazy and weak.
To take THEM seriously is to denigrate all those on this planet who struggle so hard to survive, when the complainers here only give up and cry about their lives.
One woman posted how she held her "blue dead baby" in her arms and felt her life was over. A horrible tragedy to be sure, but in so many other countries this is happening to thousands daily, from bombs, guns or even machetes, for no good reason, and yet they never seem to give up, lock themselves away in their rooms (given they even have one) and bemoan their fate on the internet.
It's very hard to be sympathetic and give these people advice other than to grow up and stop being such wimps.

From what I've read, you're an elderly fella, 66 years old? Perhaps you've forgotten the trials, tribulations and angst of being a teenager. (The site says 18+ but let's face it there's a large majority of minors here.)

I went through depression and teenage angst myself and high school felt like my world. Puberty is a tough and confusing time, alot of soul searching happens in that period. It's easy for you to think its melodramatic you've been through it, been through an entire lifetime.

Comparing people from different nations problems, although it may make you feel better if you are a first world person comparing to a third world problem may make you feel better short term it doesn't address the problem. Don't belittle peoples problems. To you they may be minor, but to others it could be the one that tips them over the edge.

We are all products of our environment and depending on where you live that environment is different.

      • I was just reaching for the words to say...exactly this when I read your post...but you said it better than I would have, and without the sarcasm that I would have injected ;)

I liked it better when it was your gf posting on the site, not you. She seemed human. You just seem like a self centred cunt.

Yes I'm 66, and in that time I've seen the horrors that so many in the world must deal with on a daily basis personally, whereas you don't seem to have more than the narrow vision your TV gives you.
No one handed me a great life; I went out and earned it, beginning in my teen years when the world was on the brink of nuclear inhalation, as crab fisherman in Alaska. Don't tell me I don't remember growing up, with the USSR and the US facing off with their fingers on the end of the world buttons. Or knowing that at 18, if your draft number was called you would most likely die in the steaming jungles of a shitty little country in SE Asia within 3 months. How could anyone forget teen years like THAT?
But few in my generation hid in their rooms, blaming all their problems on others. We went out in the world and most made a decent life for themselves, without medicating themselves into a stupor.
How dare you call me a "self centred(sic)cunt". I've done a lot of good for a lot of people in this world (and saved a few lives and fought for my country) and I'm sick to death of these cry babies who are well fed, clothed and housed, with education available to most, holing up in their rooms moaning about how terrible THEIR lives are.
        Get a grip.
I am not talking about the OP here, I was replying to her question, because my posts could be considered rude by some, though I would like to think my posts might give some perspective to those with problems.

        • With all due respect, didn't your generation actively seek wealth redistribution? I was young during the hippy movement of free love and communes, but the movement was significant enough to inspire the band Ten Years After to mock the counter-culture of your time..

"Tax the rich, feed the poor
'Till there are no, rich no more"

The only reason I make that point is because you claim that your generation "went out into the world and made a decent life for themselves," but not until after turning mainstream culture into what it is today, inevitably leading a generation towards a sense of entitlement to the latest gadgets.

I'm not much younger than you, I grew up during the Cold War too. It was 3 minutes till midnight during my high school years. Nothing about that era justified trashing people who are looking for help in what can be a cold world.

There will always be someone facing worse problems than another, but the battles that rage within each individual can be overwhelming...regardless of the trials others are facing. I would hope that enough compassion and respect lie within each of us to extend it to whomever needs it at the time...

no offense but maybe some of your questions were too simple, too obvious, or just plain comical from a troll's point of view. like they said before you have to have a bit of a thick skin when posting on this sort of forums

  • No...it's not normal. It shouldn't be.

I've made a few mistakes myself. I've assumed that someone was a troll who deserved it, later to find that I was wrong, and I've tried to be funny, only to have my humor that fall flat.

...but I've never meant to be cruel, and my intentions are always to help if the OP is sincere.

Which posts are you talking about? I rarely see people who are rude here unlike on other sites where it's pretty much a given.

I have seen people get up set and delete their post when they don't get the advice they wanted to hear though.
