Is it normal for me to think transsexuals are mentally ill?

Alright, before you guys get your rustles jimmied, hear me out.

I believe that a person who does not accept in the scientifically proven fact that they are literally what they are, is mentally ill.

I believe that if more people in this crazy world would simply accept themselves for who they are and worry less about what gender their personality fits into, we wouldn't have transexuals and stuff.

If we would spend more time exploring ourselves as individuals and less time placing ourselves into cubicles, maybe we didn't have to change things about ourselves at all and just learn to accept ourselves as a person.

Let me overly simplify the aforementioned for an example;

"Timmy likes barbies. Barbies are made for girls. Timmy will think he's actually a girl."

Wouldn't it be great if Timmy would just think "I like barbies and I accept myself for who I am."?
(Again, huuuge over simplification. Can't stress that enough.)

I'm a little aggravated because a lot of these people just expect the world to sort of revolve around them, expecting everyone to adjust to their emotions and if they don't get ridiculed and called transphobic. I've never been called this but I've seen it happen. This isn't an attack or something though. Try to not get triggered :p

On a whole other note, what do you think about genderfluids? Personally I believe it's taking it a little too far and these people are just focused on being special snowflakes but whatever.

Sorry for the long read guys. Thanks for reading.

We should accept ourselves for who we are and don't feel the need to change 5

I agree with this 100%. I think that while these people completely believe that they are the wrong gender, those such beliefs are caused by mental illness which should be addressed. Just because someone is completely convinced they’re transgender and this is who they are, doesn’t mean they’re not mentally ill.

Yeah, very right, your post, I feel the same way. Instead of going to the operation theatre they should probably consult a psychologist.

I know some transpeople and I can´t make up my mind about it either.

    BUT

They are either mentally ill or legitimate.
But if they get happier being called their prefered pronuns and go through surgery, why the fuck not?

    It´s none of my business.

But I Think that a lot of these Girls (they are usually Girls) with exess flab , short hair and unshaven armbits just don´t feel like they fit into the stereotype of the girly girl so they Think they are either boys or some genderfluid shit.

this is uncontroversial. trans people are mentally ill, by defintion, since tey suffer from gender dysphoria.

the definition of mental illness is a condition of behaviour that causes distress and affects how they function. gender dysphoria kind of fits this.

    • Not all trans people suffer from gender dysphoria. Just saying.

I'm trans and I happen to suffer with it, but a trans friend of mine doesn't have it

Transgendering to me is almost like Frankenstein's monster. It's a created gender with the help of surgery and hormones.

You are who you are born as. There is gay and lesbians as alternatives.

Yes, they are. It’s an actual condition referred to as gender dysphoria. I suffered from it at a young age. Hormone pills are the usual treatment, and they work. :)

    You kind of contradict yourself.
-"If we would spend more time exploring ourselves as individuals and less time placing ourselves into cubicles..."
Isn't that what transsexuals are doing, braking out of a cubicle where others want to place them?

-"these people just expect the world to sort of revolve around them, expecting everyone to adjust to their emotions".
Does this sound familiar? Everyone has to conform to your expectations?

Personally I don't spend much time worrying about the subject. If someone wants to change sexes why should I be concerned?

TL;DR but yeah, transitioning is just another form of body modification, people can do whatever they want with themselves

  • Don't be transphobic. I'm transgender and I am not mentally ill. I have had mental illnesses, but that was pre-transition and also partly because I was so upset because I was born in the wrong body. Now that I'm transitioning, I feel so much more comfortable and accepting of life.
You clearly don't understand transgender people at all. Gender identity and mental health are two different things. Sure, sometimes they coincide, such as when someone who is transgender suffers from gender dysphoria or anxiety/depression around their body image, but they are not synonymous and you can't put all trans people in the same boat and assume that transgender people are mentally ill. That's like saying "all black people are from Africa" or "veganism is an illness" just because vegans don't eat meat like their human omnivore bodies are designed to.
Sure, biologically we are born to be either a female or a male, but it's actually in the process of being proved that transgender people actually have the brain of the opposite sex e.g. a biological female who is transgender will have a female body and a male brain, and therefore as they grow up, they realise that their body doesn't match their thoughts and who they are inside.

    • There are no male or female brains. It's all in your head.

      • Very punny

But seriously though, the male brain is very different from the female brain, in terms of overall size and the size of the frontal cortex etc. It really does have a huge effect. There is a study in the Netherlands at the moment about the brains of transgender people.
