Is it strange to think someone's a really great friend when they want to be, but sometimes they are a complete jerk around other people? So I guess I'm asking is this a real friend?
Totally normal for teenagers, AND some adults too! You can chose your friends, you don't have to put up with their crap! If you get sick of it, talk to them and if it doesn't change, move on!
One of my friends is like that, We think of him as the Token Douchebag of the group. We laugh about it, bacause he says shit about everyone :)
I don't think that's a true friend at all. It's definietly common, but I would not say normal. Now, arguing. That's another story. Friends will sometimes have disagreements, but that can be from spending so much time together that the both of you get sick of each other. Well, that and various other reasons. But to be a jerk. I would never treat my friend's that way, and as for my guy friends: even if the guy I'm crushing on were standing a foot away from me, I would still act the same as I normally do. I wouldn't put on this act like, "F-off! He's here! He's in the same room. You have to leave!". And I wouldn't be stand offish either.
However, it's not strange that you feel this way. It's so sad to say, but some people really are only nice when they wanna be. But it will catch up to them someday. And on that day it will bite them in the a**! <Choose your friends wisely.>
Yeah it's normal especially when they are doing it to impress a girl or guy.
