Is it normal for fanbases to ruin your interests in some things

Often, when I am a fan of certain things, or otherwise show a great interest in them, the fanbases almost completely kill my interest in them, whether it be from the sheer fanboyism or even worse. For example, one of my prime interests is animals. Animals have always appealed to be ever since I was a child, and I have always liked spending time with them. The internet animal fanbase, on the other hand, is perhaps the worst fanbase of them all. Being Asian, every time I see some nice animal story, there's a 1/3 chance that the comment section is going to turn into a huge Asian bashing racist fest. Not to mention often the sheer amount of people who feel the need to scream torture and/or abuse at every single animal video and demonize the owner regardless of whether or not abuse actually happened, and even at times encouraging rape and child abuse. While I enjoy the topic of animals, and animal cruelty disheartens me, the fanbase has really eroded my interest in the subject at least on the internet. I also have a strong interest in 1990's media/games as well as being a 90's kid, but the problem is that a lot of 90's kids turned rabid with their nostalgia and scream a bunch of terrible unhistorical nonsense about how the 90's were the garden of Eden and anything after was like hell, sometimes even downrating anyone who says anything otherwise (yes, I even got downrated for mentioning that the Rwanda genocide happened in the 90's). Yes, I get it, the 90's were great and all, but those fanboys are really making me sometimes associate 90's thinks with a bitter aftertaste.

tl;dr: When I have an interest or am a fan of something, a terrible fanbase can ruin my interest in it.

Is that normal?

I refuse to listen to One Direction solely because of this insane cult fanbase they have consisting out of little more than sheer metric tons of braces, tampons and deathly shrieking.

    • Sometimes they can't be ignored, because at times they will appear anytime you look up the subject.

This is very normal. I lost interest in certain retro TV shows and video games because of how batshit insane the fanbases were. They were ready to pounce on anybody who criticized anything about the show or game they felt so fond of. I regained my interest after I realized that they don't make up the entire fanbase and now I just laugh off their stupidity and ignore whatever hate comments I receive from them.
