Is it normal for cops to id the passenger when pulled over for speedin

A friend of mine was taking me home and got pulled over for speeding. The cop asked for her ID and insurance before going back to his car to perform whatever duties. He then walks over to my window, knocks on it and I roll it down. He asks for my ID, and I hand it to him before he, once again, goes back to his car and does whatever. We were currently out of my hometown, and in a clean, "family-friendly" city. I lived in a nearby town that is nationally known for it's crime and Drug Abuse. I'm wondering if it's normal for the cops to ID a passenger in a speeding incident, or if there's some other reason.

^ yeah that doesn't exist. Of course there are laws that have been enacted in all states that are dated and ridiculous but aren't included in the current copy of the penal codes.
For the OP: It's common...I often requested ID from all passengers in a vehicle. It's a safety precaution and it's a good way to snag people with outstanding warrants. Try not to stress :-)

Yes, totally normal to ID a passenger just from my personal experience. I have been ID'd this way numerous times.

Once, when I was a teenager and not even old enough to drive, I was with a friend who was pulled over. They asked for my ID and I did not have one. They dropped the issue, didn't even ask my name or where I lived. They just left me alone. I thought that was a little unusual.

maybe they are looking for a suspect and they had set out a perimeter to make sure suspect doesnt escape , or that he is not holding you hostage next to him/her and forcing you to drive him out of there.

I don't know if this is just a state or government law, but if a cop asks for your ID and you don't have it at least near you they can arrest you. It's one of those BS laws like the one in Texas that says you have to have a $5 permit to go bare foot in public.
