Is it normal for canadians to hate america

I am American and work in Canada, what I don't understand is that all my canadian friends hate America. They always talk about how all Americans are fat and carry guns everywhere and they say how Canada is far superior. I think Canada and America are both great countries and favour neither. Is it normal for Canadians to hate America?

I'm French Canadian. We don't hate everyone, just saying.

Also I think the thing about Canadians hating America is slightly true. It's not like we hate the people, we just hate the system.
From an outsiders perspective when you learn about Americans in war (without any propaganda surrounding it) and see how major corporations basically run the country and see the corrupted money/oil motivated deals made by presidents it's kinda hard to like it.

It's been my experience that French Canadians are quite insular and hate anyone who is not French or does not speak French.

A good majority of Americans hate the system too. Everyone agrees that things are way out of control.

Oh, speaking of large corporate/government corruption, how's that Alberta tar sand project going?

I'm sorry to hear that you've only met hateful French Canadians. It's been my experience, living in Quebec my entire life, that your assumptions are not true.

Also regarding corruption I think we can agree both America and Canada can cut back on it a little.

Well, as an American living in the Southern United States, I can tell you that the Canadians I know and encounter regularly don't hate America, or Americans, but have expressed disapproval for certain aspects of American society. Two prominent complaints:

    1) Obesity. Canadians have expressed to me that they do not understand our desire to eat processed food that is really quite gross (though I'm sure many McDonald's have been established in Canada, but I could be wrong). They are also confused with American women's desire to become more fit and their publicizing of their fad workout plan. The women still remain fat, and either they aren't working out correctly or they're creating a facade on Facebook.

    2) We are weak. We expect to be complimented and given rewards (college degrees, raises, etc) without actually doing any work for it. We believe that because we are in the United States, the land of opportunity, that job security and excellence should be guaranteed. If we were to be told the truth about our abilities, and what our shortcomings were, our public school students would cry in a corner and overall, society would be crippled when faced with their ineptitude in so-and-so area.

But hatred for the U.S.? Nah...

    • That's a very interesting perspective and so honest. Hahaha, you're right about there being an almost general consensus about Canadians disapproving of American-styles of food. Honestly, my friends and I have, on a few occasions, mentioned in passing how we notice Americans enjoy/eat a lot of, what we would think of as, 'gross' food. I've never heard of the publicizing a fad workout on Facebook being a problem... Is it?

You lost me a bit on your second point, though. Most of the conversations I've had with other Canadians (I am British Columbian, btw) have never been about Americans seeming "weak" or that American feels opportunity should be "guaranteed" in life. Many of those other Canadians I've talked to, are a little perplex by how many Americans buy into the illusion of the American Dream, believing that anyone can make it if they just have the will to succeed. The USA is currently experiencing a recession; work is hard to find and many, many people are being underpaid and overworked. How can citizens get ahead when an economy is holding them back?

Of course, we don't hate the U.S. :)

  • Yeah, I'm sorry, but it is actually very normal.

I wouldn't describe it as a true "hate" though, it's more of a disdain. We (I am Canadian too) grow up watching Americans make the most ignorant comments and jokes about Canada/Canadians on television, so many Canadians have an attitude of, "Fuck you, USA, we're an awesome nation!"

So, their anti-American attitude is more of a defensive thing than a hatred thing. But, as a Canadian, I am sorry you have to endure that shit on behalf of your country. You should say to those Canadians, "Hey, I'm just an individual - don't stereotype me." They *should* back off after that.

      • Oh, for sure I do! I love all of my American friends; mostly the ones from IIN, but I have a few IRL too. :)

        Eeep! :O
I hope my comment comes across as more of an explanation for the attitude the OP has observed and *not* something I personally feel about Americans.

America used to be the greatest country on Earth. I hate America in that it has become more like Canada is today -- multi-kulti and anti-white.

A Canadian asked me the other say what fried dough and a rootbeer float was... I don't care if America has an obesity problem, I still think we've got some things right.

I've never encountered any "hate" toward Americans except in Quebec. French Canadians not only hate Americans, they also hate English-speaking Canadians – and the feeling is mutual.

If you're working in some province other than Quebec and people hate you, it's probably because you're an asshole.

It's probably normal to a degree, but its totally unfounded hate. Americans and Canadians are one in the same. Forget their respective countries policies. Put someone from the midwest with some dude from Manitoba and there will no discernable difference as far as culture goes.
