Is it normal for artists to think their own lyrics are lame

everytime i try to right a song i end up just thinking my lyrics are lame or just suck and end up being to whiney or similar to other songs. do most musicians get this feeling or should song writing just be something i should not go for being a guitarists. i really want to be the lead singer/ rhythm guitarists of a band. my voice isn't bad and i good enough at guitar but the lyrics to songs are usually relied on the singer

I'm exactly like you. I write loads of songs, some successful to an extent, some shamefully embarrassing.

The key is to remember that everyone is self-critical and this is how you improve. That's the end goal right?

Keep writing, anyone will tell you that. Also, have a good friend, in the band preferably who will give you good HONEST feedback. Don't worry if something sucks, you'll improve on it at a later stage.

Also, read poems, books, and take note of other lyrical styles of artists that you like, so you don't get bogged down writing about the same old girls over and over.

    Hope this helps =)

I was going to comment but whoknew said everything I was going to. Just keep on writing.

Even the best poets and lyricists wrote some terrible stuff, we just barely ever hear about it.

im a singer and soon to play the acoustic guitar and i do the same thing... the easiest thing to do is cut on some classical music that you havent heard before that doesnt have lyrics and just write poems or songs!

  • As a songwriter myself, it's normal to be overly critical of what you write but the best way to get better is to show your lyrics to people and ask their opinions.

When I first started writing at 13, my lyrics were crap and bland, nothing special but as I grew up and wrote more and more, I learned what works and what doesn't.

Also as the above person said, write from emotion. It doesn't really matter if they are whiny or cliche, so long as they have a good rhythm and feel to them.

My advice is keep practicing because that is how you'll improve.

I think often times, singers sing/write lyrics that they don't necessarily like. They sing/write lyrics based on what will sell and top the charts. You need to write from an emotion you are feeling. Therefore it's genuine to who you truly are. The best time to write is right when you are experiencing that emotion ie: heartache
