This has not happened to me personally but it happened to a friend... should that happen? It's made me scared to try anal I don't want my a-hole to rip.

No, if anal is done right, it should NEVER hurt. It may be uncomfortable, but not painful. Do some research, Google "anal play for beginners" and read all that you can.
