Is it normal for an older person to frequent the is it normal forum?

Hello all. My name is Kerris and I am new to IIN. I am a 47 y/o, African American female. I have noticed that there are a lot of young Caucasian people on this forum with just a smattering of people who are 30 and 40 something. Anyone older than that I have not encountered yet. Most people seem to be holding their cards close to their chest in terms of revealing a profile picture or any other information about who they are, what they are, or why they are frequenting this forum. So, I started to feel sort of weird about being here (and showing my profile pic -- should I be concerned?) so I wanted to put the questions out there and to ask exactly what the real deal was. Am "I" normal on the is it normal forum?

All I can say is welcome, this is a really good place to express yourself. And also, come on, at 47 you're not old, just interesting :)

I can't doubt there aren't mature sensible teens out there, but the majority aren't or cant care to be sensible.
The fact that there is a rule alone is enough for me, if someone says 'not on this site,' respect it and move on. The rule is likely in place for mature matters and perhaps topics of an unsuitable nature, like sex and drugs. It's unlikely that most teens have enough experience with either to respond appropriately.
That's why I like the rules. That, and I'm tired of: 'does he like me,' 'she stares at me in math,' 'is sex lyl dis the 1st time?'

  • I agree with dappled. I thin aslong as your over 18 that any age over 18 should be on here and the older the better because older people tend to have more experience.

    Welcome Kerris!

I'm about your age. I think everyone here is awsome. I have a picture of my cat on my profile. She is 19 now but that picture was taken about 12 years ago. So, I put alot about myself on here and I like some kind of mystery by not having my own picture there.

    Again welcome!

Welcome kerris. There's people of all ages here, so don't worry. I'm 19 and probably one of the youngest people here.

Welcome! Dappled's right: we tend to ignore age in most cases, so long as you're sensible. :p
In reply to profiles: I initially joined through the app, and only recently learned it was a website. I've since logged on there and made a profile and included a blurb about me. I've omitted a picture simply because I feel it's inappropriate (I'm rather private when it comes to online), and mainly because it allows a teeny bit of anonymousity, since I've given details of myself. Kudos to you for having guts though. :)

Welcome! The "who" behind the thought does not matter here. All are welcome. I hope you enjoy yourself :)

Everyone is welcome here. We even have people under the age of 18 (despite having to agree that you are 18 or over when signing up). But their opinion is as important as anyone's. So is yours.

One thing I don't see a lot of on IIN is ageism. We all tend to treat each other as equals and just get along. It's nice like that here.

    • I dislike it when people sign up when they are younger than 18. I have talked to someone and found out at 16 and to be honest I wasnt supprised.

I'm a bit like you. I believe in following the rules and it confuses me when people just don't care and do what they want regardless.

On the other hand, the 16 year old me was better behaved and more mature than I am now. Every birthday, I get a bit looser and a bit more child-like. But the 16 year old me knew nothing about the important stuff (relationships, family, friends, work) and if I'd had access to this site and wisdom enough to know who was talking sense and who was feeding me crap, I'd have spared myself a lot of pain and confusion. Being a teenager is hard. I'm not saying getting past twenty made things any easier for me, but at least I understood better why things were hard.

As a community on IIN, we've experienced virtually everything life can throw at us. I don't know what it's like to be gay, lesbian, black, married, divorced, a father, a mother, pregnant, American, or anything other than what I've experienced, but I guarantee if I posted a story saying I was falling into, say, heroin addiction, someone would know what it's like and someone would have advice. In fact, I already know this is the case.

I wouldn't want to deny the wisdom of this site to a 16 year old me, or a 16 year old anyone. It's one of those deals where breaking the rules seems to make sense. The older I get, the more examples of this I see. It's like those "Don't Walk On The Grass" signs in parks. Humans have been doing that ever since we've been human and what is better than taking your shoes off and communing with nature, standing toe to toe with a planet that may house the only life in the universe? A million men in a million municipal offices ordering a million signs ordering me to keep off the grass, are not going to keep me off the grass. My inner 16 year old says they can go suck it!

        • Lol I understand that well perhaps its a good thing if a young person came on here for wisdom then that would be a good excuse if not then I would want them to leave. To be honest dappled I usualy dont read replies if they are that long but I made an exception for yours and I agree with everything you said.
