Is it normal for all my art to be abstract and depressing?

I draw abstract black and white dim art. It gives me a shiver on some occasions. But i love to draw what I draw. I just go deep inside my head and let my hands do the work. When I'm done with the picture It's almost suprising to me at how dark it is.
Is that normal? Hahee hoho.

Try drawing upside down and see if it turns out to be the opposite.

Just do what come naturally to you and don't force yourself to any style. The best art is self expression and what you are describing sure sounds like self expression to me :).

As a semi-professional artist my one piece of advice would be don't force yourself to be dark though if it changes over the years. Just let your art grow with you to be whatever it is meant to be.

There is no such thing as "normal" in art, because every artist's imagination is normal for him or her specifically, even if it may not gel with what is considered "normal" in the real world.

If it's too dark, then maybe you are bearing down with the pencil too hard.

  • I do the same thing. Such scribbly, abstract, depressing art comes from me. But I love it!

I'm actually a pretty vibrant, colorful, happy guy, but my art is the opposite most of the time. I say it's normal.

I think it's normal, and I don't think it's anything to worry about at all, the best art I've seen is very dark.
I write a lot of poetry which is haunting and a little messed up but in life I am a very happy person.
Art can be whatever you want it to be, don't let anyone put you off doing what you want to do.
